Thanks to MikePEI I now (hopefully) have the power source for the buggy!

A YFM 250 Yamaha.

Anyone know much about these things? I know NOTHING about ATV's. This one appears to have High, low and reverse. And a starter! Yeah!

But I don't know what all the wires are for ::)

yup. 83-86 should have all that. 83-84 have high-low-reverse, but it's shifted on the tran's, 85-86 have a reverse lockout that's activated with a cable, and then shifts with the shifter..

no ya can't have my big red :P

Heck yeah!

It would have been nice to find a complete bike but for what this cost even if it doesn't work I'm not out much.

Well the bike you have was only made 2 years.
Is the starter relay there? if no theres ~$50
How about the regulator/rectifier?
Recoil starter?
Why's the inspection cover off the cam?

:) Wonderful! A limited production drive train! 8-) The value of this thing just went up! ;D

All those parts are sitting in a box that came with the bike.
