 tj gas tank skid
« Thread Started on Feb 26, 2012, 6:04pm »

I replaced the brakes on my truck today and now that it was driving good i decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and pull my gas tank down on the jeep as its been rapidly loosing pieces. got it down today. took about 2 hours to get it down and off the jeep. It was deffinitly a good call. there was nothing left to the skid at all.
so this week i will be getting some steel and making a new skid. a good project to try out my new plasma cutter.

here are some progress pics.

I was going to make one too but steel cost more than a new one
I just brought a new hd stock rubicon one at apj for $180 + tax and only took one day to get

niiice. I see there looks like a little leaked gas around the top of your tank. if I were you, this would be a good opportunity to reseal that. I think there is a seal or o-ring in there if you turn off the lock ring?

Steel is stupid cheep at John Ross in truro,

I used 1/8 when I built mine.....holding up fine.....I'm my garage.

1/8 is also adequate for using as a jack point. I also put some reinforcing ribs out of half inch square stock.......less weight same job your call,

Ross usuallly has dozens of 12 - 16" square pieces of 1/8th laying around by the shelves, plus bigger sheets and pieces out back

I used 3/16" for mine, I use it for lifting the back end of the Heep, and have dropped off of some serious ledges onto it, with no issues, bends, or breaks. mine was free except for the cost of my welding wire... not sure what the stuff is worth, but I'm pretty sure it weighs 40lbs or more....

$180 sounds pretty decent for one ready to bolt on... how thick is the steel used for the Rubi one?

Use a peace of hard wood to Remove the lock ring on the fuel pump to rotate the lock ring counter-clockwise.
Than pull the fuel pump out of the tank
