I checked the thickness of the 3/16th plate I have right now, and it's only .175"!

What did you measure it with? Are you sure it's not 7ga? Is it a sheet or a bar? Hot rolled or cold?

FYI - I'm a machinist. It's hot rolled plate, and like I said, hot rolled material has big tolerances.

I think people's professions should be listed under their name to help prevent foot-in-mouth syndrome. Just so everyone knows where I came from: Graduated as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist. Worked as a CAD Monkey. Worked as a Process Engineer for the world's second largest OEM auto parts manufacturer. Worked part-time as a machinists helper. Worked as a salesman, designer, fabricator, fitter, welder, mechanic, machinist, maintenance man for a conveyor company. Mostly industrial conveyors for the automotive industry. Currently working for a refrigeration company designing industrial refrigeration systems for cold storage, freezers, breweries, ice makers, hockey rinks and curling clubs. Going onto my 12th year as a backyard mechanic without a backyard. Steve

There's an old thread in off topic where most everyone listed what they do. I did my apprenticeship at the Dockyard and worked as a journeyman there for about a year. I've had my own shop for over 12 years now. I do everything from welding up busted forestry equipment, to custom Jeep parts, to billet aluminum aircraft parts. I've been a backyard mechanic (with a shop) since I was big enough to hold a wrench.

I'm just a computer jockey, but I'm Alan's brother so I defer all things mechanical to him. ;D

Unfortunatly, the safety factor is only 1.15 with a 9000lbs winch and beam deflection will be .1043" which is slightly over the allowable .1042". I am comfortable with it though. It should never see the full 9000lbs of pull, and I used the simply supported calc and not the rigid beam calc. Which in itself means there is a SF of 2 because it will be rigid. Steve If you gusset the hitch tube it should reduce the deflection and make a handy spot to make safety chain connections John
