That's a good idea Jan...I could imagine that there are dozens more of these fatalities each year that we don't even hear about...
People if you are not familiar with the safest and proper methods of vehicle recovery, please learn... It's a matter of life and death...
Wheel safely! ;D

it sucks that it takes a fatality to remind us of how easy it is to get hurt by not using safe practices while extricating jeeps

Help me understand this. So he had a tow strap with a hook sewn in to it (?), and hooked that on a clevis, which must have slipped off the other sewn in hook? And is the safest way 2 loops and a clevis? Please clarify for newbs. Thanks.

Never hook two straps with a clevis! like happened here one strap broke and the clevis in the middle bacame a speeding missle.
I have only had to use two straps once, it was suggested to use a clevis. I told them there was no way. I ran each strap through the other strap's loop, was a bitch to get apart but no one git hurt. I'm not saying I did it right but was the quickest safest way I could think of at that moment.

That is the safest way Tim...adding a wooden dowel is a proper method...IF DONE RIGHT! but that's not to say that it is safe...either way, you should still lay something over the strap (a car mat, coat, blanket) just so if something does break there will be less chance of it going up for the windshield and possibly slow down the recoil... Lance was trying to pull me out this winter with two straps and a dowel in between and the strap snapped, the dowel did not fall to the ground but rather went through the back window of Lance's Jeep ripping the rear wiper off the back and continued through to smash the front windshield...the other 15' of strap came back at me caving in my front grill a couple inches and that was just a broken strap with nothing attached to it... It was quite the wake up call...Had it hit Lance it would have caused some serious hurtin' or if it hit someone with a normal sized head it could have killed 'em Play safe ;D Jeff

I remember when me and Jeff and Dougie went to get Eepgoo out of the mud in Truro that there was much discussion about safe recovery and it was done in an efficient and expeditious manner. Some things I see during recoveries scare me and I pride myself on doing the right thing when recovering vehicles. I would do recovery with you guys anytime.

I remember getting a call to retrieve a jeep and when we (Len and I) go there the people had 3 snatch straps joined together and attached to a 1/2 ton truck and were backing up close to the jeep and then hitting the gas hard and stretching the straps out an unbelieveable amount; then the truck got slammed backwards when the straps came to stop and they'd do it again. I put the front wheels of my jeep into a ditch and strapped it to another vehicle behind and just winched him out straight, didn't even need a snatch block. Should be a video somewhere
