When Len and I left for Truro we ensured we had the proper gear with us, when we arrived we took an extra 10 minutes to asses the situation and we chatted about the best and safest way to initiate the recovery. At no point during our recovery did we look at each other did we say "ok now what should we do?" We planned it all out from re setting the bead, dragging eepgo back to the road to making sure our camera bitch was far enough back out of harms way. Most of the time it seems to me those two things always get forgotten. People don't have the proper recovery gear with them and when a stuck does happen, they panic and without thinking they just grab whatever they can find to use and they don't take the time to think the recovery through. Accident waiting to happen.

Accident waiting to happen. Great thread to bring to the top guys. There is a safe recovery portion to the Jeep 101 too. I think people just try to rush sometimes because they are embarrassed they got stuck and just want to get out quick. I don't think there is anything to be embarrassed about when you get stuck....just means you will drive the obstacle different next time, or maybe take another line. A wise man from the Valley once told me when I was just starting that if you come up hard against your front diff it doesn't mean give it more skinny pedal...it means back up a bit and try another line.... ;D

So if i was to winch myself out of a bind using a treesaver and my winch its a bad idea to use a heavy duty d-ring(clevis) to attach the treesaver to the winch hook? Very new to the recovery part of jeeping and would rather do everything safe

Very new to the recovery part of jeeping and would rather do everything safe In that case I wouldn't use a shackle...I would just loop both eyes of the tree saver onto the hook of the winch. If you are using a snatch block on the tree saver and running your winch hook back to your front tow point then you would have to use a shackle to connect the two eyes of the tree saver to the snatch block. A couple little things you can do to make it that much safer in any winching situation is to make sure the cable is weighted down so if something gives way it will drop and not make anything into a projectile. You can also put the hood of the vehicle up for added insurance, and stand well clear of the path of tension while using the remote. Each situation is different so you have to try to do as much as you can to minimize the hazard. Think about the worst case scenario and plan for it.

Think about the worst case scenario and plan for it. Good point, and knowldge is power. If you have recovery gear and dont know how to use it, can be dangerous. If you want to learn go with other's,like I did,,,,,,and watch them do recovery's. I was lucky enough to be around to observ some of the best recovery's of this club,,, Da Dogg

Thankyou shadown for the response. Very helpful .. i did know to put something on the cable to slow down and minimize the amount of slingshot the cable does if it snaps. Ive read several things about recovery and watched a couple videos but have never really used my winch under true strain yet so i want to make sure i dont do something incredibly stupid. Was also going to look into getting a wireless remote for my winch. If i can get it for mine that is

If your winch is a Warn then there is an awesome cordless control available. Its good from over 100' with a fresh battery. Mine is three years old and has needed one battery replaced to date. Cost is around $120 I believe.
Scott has a cordless controller too, but I forget what brand. I want to say Tabor but it is entirely possible it is Runva. He will chime in.

I remember getting a call to retrieve a jeep and when we (Len and I) go there the people had 3 snatch straps joined together and attached to a 1/2 ton truck and were backing up close to the jeep and then hitting the gas hard and stretching the straps out an unbelieveable amount; then the truck got slammed backwards when the straps came to stop and they'd do it again. I put the front wheels of my jeep into a ditch and strapped it to another vehicle behind and just winched him out straight, didn't even need a snatch block. Should be a video somewhere That was after a blown brake line, dead winch and thrown rear DS... you came after all the hard work was done Oh and yeah dude with the 1/2 was insane
