While out doing Ellershouse this weekend I ended up in front breaking trail for a while at the start. With the snow marbles needless to say I was using the skinny pedal quite a bit rotating from 4 low, 4 hi, lockers, no lockers. It didn't really matter what I was in, but when I started giving it to 'er and getting up in the rpm's it would start to bounce violently when spinning in the snow. This wasn't after prolonged spinning in one spot as sometimes happens, but even when I was moving along pretty good and the rpm's got up. Worse when going uphill too. I would back off a bit and it would be fine, but obviously I would lose my momentum. Anyone ever had this happen? shocks getting weak maybe? Any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated. John

Not sure, but I'd check all your control arms and bushings, transmission mount, etc. Might just have been the conditions though, snow can do some strange things.

Are you sure it was happening when you were locked? Unlocked you can get the power bouncing back and forth from wheel to wheel as each gets traction.... there is a term for it (can't remember) Usually happens at higher RPM in 4lo.

This happened on a run last year too as he was breaking trail on another snowy trail! John's got the long arms now but had regular CAs last year. I was behind him and it was shaking enough to make the spare on the rear door's mount shake pretty good!

Yes it was definitely happening when locked Rob. When it happened the first time I started going hi, lo, locked and unlocked in both to see if there was any combination that didn't do it.

I'm not sure what causes it, but pretty much any 4x4 I've ever had would do this in snow. I doubt anything is wrong with it.

My first thought was accumulation of snow in the wheels, making them unbalanced.
Your weak shock theory sounds reasonable too. I wonder if you left the sway bar hooked up if it would bounce less? (hold the tires down)

It seems unlikely that anything is broken... since it happened last year on a snow run and now this year. Something loose or broken for that long would have showed itself in other situations imo I did a little search on other boards and there was some rumblings of clutch chatter due to snow... but I couldn't make any sense of it. (or is yours an auto?)

sounds like what my tracker likes to do..... kinda climbs up in the snow, spins just a little, sinks down in, then starts to climb up again...... all really fast.....

Most any rig I've owned will do this in the right snow conditions. leafs, long links and coils, short arms and coils..
I wonder if it happens to coilover rigs? Jeff?

Was it just when steering or straight as well? Could be u-joints making their presents known.
Happens to me when doing 4wd doughnuts on ice. ;D

I don't recall it happening anymore since I went to coilovers and I've pounded on my rig in the snow I definitely remember what it was like though...I'll never forget the first time I was in deep sand and it started hopping, I thought my Jeep was going to blow up!! What a horrible feeling!! Either way, give those RC arms a good looking over, especially the rod ends, Cindy had one blow the guts out of it and it was only half a year old... Jeff

Well I usually only crawl along so I only noticed it in the deep snow last year and in the stuff last weekend. I watched Darren spinning on the weekend as well as Brian in his Rubi and there's weren't doing it and they had way more speed going so I do think there is something going on. I sort of chaulked it up to the TrXus digging down last year but I can't see it being that. It's a standard Rob, but I even tried starting off in different gears as well.

Mine has done it too John, and I thought something was wrong with the Jeep but once it was back on the street everything was fine. I think it only ever happened to me when breaking trail. I think the snow type/consistency might have something to do with it as as well because sometimes it was worse than than other times. I think that sugary-consistency of snow is the worst. Here is a forum topic I found that discusses this problem, and it sounds like it's a normal thing that happens with snow wheeling, especially if you're the trail-breaker. www.jk-forum.com/showthread.php?24440-Axle-Hop-Wheel-Hop-on-snowI also read somewhere that sagging springs or worn shocks can exaggerate the wheel hop. Hope that helps! Cindy
