yesterday I spent a bit of time out in the shop working on the heep. not as much time as I had hoped by any means, but still better than nothing. the right side motor mount needed modification. the 2.5L motor mount on the frame is different on the passenger side than the driver side, where the 4.0 mounts are symetrical, so I had to extend the mount an inch or so, and move the hole that was there half of an inch or so. After removing the plate from the engine, I discovered one of the bolts had sheared off. it was about 3/16" below the surface, so I built it up with weld, and then welded up a nut and turned it out. so once I had that fixed, I got back to the mount. all I did was cut out the top flat section of the mount, make a new piece of plate to fit in, drill the holes where I wanted them, and welded it into place. next, I moved into the transmission mount. I wasn't happy with the piece I had made before, since I did it without the engine and transmission in place. I copied the loactions and heights of the factory holes in the original skid plate. unfortunately, that was more work than I needed to do. everything fits just fine on the flat plate without any raised locations, and the torque mount will actually be better off that way. I could have left it raised, but I knew I was going to have problems with my rear driveshaft angles, so I decided that I would drop the transmission mount about an inch, back to about flat. EDIT got some pics uploaded. heading outside for a little bit.

I picked up new frost plugs a week or so ago, and put them in with blue RTV. monday Ipulled the rear axle out again, removed the axle shafts, and pulled the ring and pinion. I was expecting to see my gears tuesday, so I cleaned thinngs up, and got ready for the re-gearing. then the gears didn't arrive til wednesday, so I didn't get any more work done. then when the gears showed up, due to communication error I only received one set of gears, and I'd rather not gear one axle and leave the other one for a rainy day, so I think I'll be sticking with 3.31's until I have both sets of gears in the garage, and I'm a few more steps ahead in the build. so last night I got out for a bit, and did some cleaning. ground all of the crap off of the rear axle, after putting the diff cover back on and some stuffing into the ends of the axle tubes. I used a wire wheel on my new DeWalt 4 1/2" grinder. then I cleaned the rest of the pieces of brackets off with a grinding wheel on the same grinder. after running it for nearly 45 minutes straight, I stopped and felt it, and it was barely even warm! so once the tubes were clean, I gave it a nice thick coat of black paint, with a brush. then I sand blasted one of my backing plates, gave it a coat of Rust Check rust converter, then once that was dried up, gave it a nice coat of black paint also. i only did one backing plate so I could keep the other side intact to use for reference. maybe I'll get the other one done tonight, not sure.

I spent a bit of time working out in the shop this weekend, managed to get the rear axle back together, with all new brakes, and have the brake lines bent, with the parking brake cables in and ready to hook up onto the frame. axle and drums are all painted, gears and axles are back in, and bearings are all cleaned up. I got all of the brackets cut off before sanding, grinding, and painting the axle tubes. I also got the bushing pressed out of the rear leaf springs, and new ones in, and new centre bolts. now the axle is all ready to bolt back up!

HUGE UPDATE!!! firstly, the rear axle is reassembled, installed, and has brakes, and park brakes. I replaced the front brakes, and set up the hub bearings. the brake lines are all finished for the rear brakes, except for there they go to the distribution block. tonight I had Lance and Trevor come over, and they helped me out to set the body tub back onto the frame. it was one hell of a time, but it is sitting on some blocks, about 2" higher than final height. I wanted it on the frame now so I can get the tub inside to start fixing it up. lots of rebuilding to do to the tub. the back of it is shot, and will have 3" channel along the bottom below the tail gate. the corners need serious work, and once the sheet metal is finished, they will be covered with custom corner guards.after that, the rest of the body needs attention. lots of work left to do, but the list is getting shorter!

Lookin good Dan,One question for ya...If your going to put some corner guards, why bother having sheet metal under them? Or maybe I'm thinking of something different than you.

I was kinda liking the hood scoop also. it kept the moisture out of the engine while it sat out the other night. Rue, I planned to put the corner guards over top as a second layer of protection, more-or-less, rather than a replacement panel. if the body work turns into a bit too much, that may change, and the corners may get cut out, but I will have to be really careful if i do that, because there will be nothing left to support the body after I cut out the sheet metal. I think that cleaning up the sheet metal and then bolting the steel up would be easier in the long run, although a little more time consuming.

the Wife went out for the day yesterday, so me and Alexander Kieth spent the day out working on the heep. the rear had spread open close to an inch at the top, due to there not being any support left from the rear frame crossmember. I literally couldn't close the tailgate because it was pointed the wrong direction. my mission was to strenghten it up, make it more tidy, and flat enough to put some corner guards on over top. I wasn't too worried about having dents or anything, because I am just going to paint the corners and cover them with plate. I started by cutting out all of the metal in the rear support. I chopped the spot welds and cut along the bent on the back, leaving me just the little raised secgtion that goes from side to side. a 4-foot section of 3" channel was perfect for the application, and I lined it up, and put a couple of cold tack welds to the floor panel. once that was finished, I was able to get into the corners. this is the passenger side, and what I had to work with. I started by cutting out the bottom of it, and put in new 22-ga. then I worked my way up and over. I used a pint paint can to make my bend, which worked quite well. and then it was all done. now on to the other side... then on to the next task. I knew I was going to have to cut come of the floor out because of the gas takn being so high up. I decided last night that after re-inforcing the rest of the rear, it would be as good a time as any to do it. so there I am now. just need to get me some small angle iron and make a cover for the gas tank, and that will be done. next!! will be the body mounts.

ysterday evening was one of those evenings. you ever have one of those evenings? it started out with me wanting to get the floor cleaned up on the driver side where the roll bar mounts. it was gone there, everything fell apart from there to the rocker. so I gave thigns poke and a pry, then tried to lift the tub a little with the hi-lift, and the rocker split from bottom to top, and all that was left holding it together was the top lip. so then I looked ahead, and below the door hinges, it had split apart there also, and the windshield frame was out of alignment by like 2 inches. sooo.... it was time to boat-side it with the pre-fabbed sides I picked up last year. cut my opening, picked up one spot, then the rest would drop. clamp two places, and the front would dip down.... then the door was hanging down an inch or more below the opening.... not a fun evening, by any means. now, I have it lined back up, as close as I'm going to get it I think. the door closes again, so maybe a small tweak to come tonight or tomorrow, then I'm welding in floor panels.. what a fawking night.

It's alive! I spent over two hours this evening, installing the manifolds, plumbing the vacuum system, hooking up last few electrical components, and fuel lines...
only to discover that when I went to prime the fuel system the fuel sending unit had sprung a leak. fortunately I had another out on another rig, so I pulled it out, swapped it in, and then gave it a try. no fuel pump kicking in.... wtf? OHHH I forgot to plug in the sending unit. no power means no fuel. who'da thunk it? so I tried again. lots of prime, fuel pump makes lots of noise. great step forward. tried it a couple of times, and crank. and crank. and crank. nothing at all. I wondered to myself if I have the lines backwards? went out back and unhook the first line. gave it a tug, and WHAMMO! I just received a gasoline shower. now that I am highly flammable, and have a bunch in my eye, I go inside, wash my face off. back outside again, go to switch lines, and discover that the pressure line out of the top of the sending unit is loose and leaks.... fawwwwwwwkkkkkkkk..... fawk it, I held the key anyways, and it cranked, and cranked, and cranked..... and then fired up like nothing! the thing runs like a top, sounds beautiful, and shoots a 5-foot spray of oil out the side of the oil filter! so I cleaned the stereo off, and some other odds and ends, shut off the lights, and called it a night.
