the big wire that passes through the "black box" is your alternator ground. it goes to the engine block. I *think* both of the large studs there are connected but I can only assume that, as there is only one large cable that runs into the box. the two other wires that go into the box, one is your alternator "exciter wire", which tells the alternator to charge when you turn the ignition on, and the other one more than likely will be your tachometer wire.

So far right is ground to engine block.
The two smaller on is the field coil wire from the ECU and the other is to the TACH?? Thought the ECU fed both wires one was the signal and the other made sure the signal made it through the circuit?
What is the larger one on the left? Another ground?

I was just making the assumption about the small wires. I'm used to larger alternators on highway trucks and such, which often operate in that manner. I think both of the larger terminals are ground, sicne there is only one large wire coming in, I can only assume that both large terminals would be ground.

Oh ok thanks for the input.
Trying to figure out if I can re-create the function or not. Having issues with getting an alternator to charge and this is the only thing yet to change.

one of the large terminals should be the charge wire to the battrey most likely the one in the black box

nope, the charge wire is separate I believe, it attaches on a different spot on the alternator.

You should be able to connect a hot wire from the battery directly to the sensing terminal on the alternator and be able to get 14 V. If you get 14 V you're alternator and V reg are good, your ignition wire/ignition to the alt is bad.
A GM alt works that way.
