Can some one tell me what are the capabilities and limitations on the Chrysler 8.25 and the Dana 44. I now have the 8.25 on the 94 XJ but have always been thinking of a D44 swap when the 92 was good. Just wondering if the D44 is a viable swap now or are they pretty much the same?

I think the only advantage to putting in the 44 would be availability and price of gears and lockers. As far as strength, I don't think it would much difference

def. worth it to swap the d44 over a d35, but probably better to spend the money elsewhere first is you have the 8.25.
it will bolt right in tho... if gear ratio is same.
bigger brakes on the d44. still just drums tho.

Early 8.25's ran a 27 spline axle that was switched to a 29 for strength. Mopar offered full case Detroit's through the dealers for the 27 spline axles. The Detroit's sold for 400.00.
The bad thing about the 8.25's is the pinion angles SUCK! They can be very, very hard to get rid of vibrations if they should appear after installing a lift kit. As for swapping them out for a 44 it's a waste of money. Now as for Brakes just as in the case of the Dana 44 the 8.25 was offered in the Police Model of the XJ. Most people don't realize this but larger brakes are available for them. It increases braking surface by almost 50%. The rear axles were only available by special order in the US to Police and Fire Agency's. I used to get messed up until I got my parts book and saw the different options.

I have had no issues at all with my 8.25 at all. I have 207k on it with the factory U-joints. I have no vibs or anything. I have destroyed the spider gears in my dana 30 twice. Never hurt the 8.25. It also has the 29 spline shats as well. I guess they screwed up at the factory.

I haven't heard to many guys breaking a 8.25.....29 spline atleast. But then again, the same for the D44. I say if u have the 29 spline 8.25 (more than likely, in your 94XJ, it's a 27 spline), keep it in.
So are gears cheaper for a D44 than a 8.25? I know u can get a Lockright or No-Slip for the 8.25.
I have a 8.25 (29 spline) with a Lockright and haven't had any problems (breakage) yet (been wheeling the thig ofr 4 years).

d44 has the cheapest everything - it's the most common axle out there, used by all north american auto manufactures. that and d30.
