Looks great Rue !! Are you working in a moving Van body ? looks like pretty tight Quarters cube van box I think. When I feel cramped or try to blame something on my workspace.....I think of the awesome shit Rue is turning out of a cube van and get back to work. No excuses! Lol. Yeah, I'm sticking it together in a 18' truck box. It's a little cramped, but I don't have to walk far to get my tools. I need to build a garage, but this works for now.

The VW Nerds are curious about your engine mount on the front side (injection pump side) of the engine. If you wouldn't mind satisfying our curiosity with a photo it'd be appreciated I removed the stock alt. bracket, and made my mount bolt on top of the water pump housing. I wasn't quite sure where else to put it. Didn't want it way back on the back of the motor. I still have to make a mount off it for my power steering pump. Then I'll adds a few more braces to it. I'm hoping that I can keep the bolts tight, since there's the alum. water pump housing sandwicked between it and the block. Time will tell....LOL

dan- I'm not to worried about the dirt and rocks being spun at me. Didn't have much between me and the tires on the last one, and that one was over 400 hp and had 42s. I'm thinking this one is goin to be pretty mellow compared to that. Plus with the way I've got the floor pans turned up in the front, they should stop most of the dirt, etc.
Creepy- as for the front shock interference. I'm just goin to put a small dent in the tube where the shock hits. I'm goin to have a bar that runs between the two front shock hoops. I'll just build a little preload into it. I've only have to gain a 1/8" and then things will clear.

Crapytire had the 8500 lb super winches on sale the week. I picked one up for the buggy. I wanted a short drum winch but wasn't have much luck try to get a Runva, so I figured this would be a good one to cut up. Selling the cable off of it if anyone is lookin. 5/16"x 94' Pretty bad when u buy a new winch and the first thing u do is tear it apart. LOL. Drum in the lathe, goin to cut 4" out of it I cut the drive end of the drum, looked easier than gettin the brake out and back in the drum. All welded up All ready to go back together That's it for now. Have to finish it up ltr on tonight

Neat, moddng a cheap winch is the way to go. Nice TIG welds.
The old rocker base tooling on the lathe caught my eye, mine has the same stuff.

Got the winch stuck back together. Pretty happy with how it turned out. I made new cross bars out of 6061 aluminum round bar, figured that was easier than workin with the stock steel bars. You can see the stock steel bars in the pic, I narrowed the drum 4". I'm pickin up 50' of 3/8" winch rope from Pecks, than this little project will be done. I might wrap the drum with a single layer of header wrap before I put the rope on it. The paper work that came with the winch says not to put rope on this winch, because the brake will make to much heat. I never had any problems on my other winches that I put rope on, but I could see the drum gettin hot on very heavy winching. These winches have a pretty easy life on these rock buggies. Most of the time they are just a suck down winch.

Its cute!
The header wrap would prob work perfect for rope.

Slick rue. Superwinches do get hot during heavy winching so the header wrap is probably a good idea.

Spent a few hours and got a pair of winch mounts mocked up. Did them a little different on this buggy, I'm mounting the winches on the axle housings instead of the chassis. Keep the weight down low!! As you can see there's just enough room at full bump for the winch to tuck up into the chassis. But I am goin to have to reroute the plug for the winch controler. Did the same thing on the rear axle for a 2000lb winch Need to make a fair lead mount for the front winch and anchors on the chassis for both winches. I need to get back at this and get a few more little things done, than I can strip it down and get some paint on it. Axle housings are starting to look pretty rusty.

Got the exhaust system built tonight. This a pretty simple system on this buggy, only 24" long. I'm not sure how loud it will be, hopefully not to loud. LOL
