Well, as the buggies get better and better and the trails get harder and harder, I think it's time that we start wearing some sort of head protection. People are using more horse power and speed to over come the obstacles, the chances go up for things to go wrong. And as we all know the buggies sometimes dont end up on the wheels. It would be nice if we all had cages with all kinds of head room, but in tryin to make the buggies more compact to fit through some of these trails it's not possable to have enough head room. So,when is it time to say that we should be wearing helmets? So, what do we need for helmets?? I think that we don't need a DOT helmet. I see that most of the rock bouncer guys are wearing skate board style helmets. Something that is light and can breath. If have your harness on right, that style helmet should do the job of protecting your head if you bump a bar on the cage. Our roll overs are not high speed roll overs. Most are just flops, but sometime we can probably get a little bit of speed. I'd say 30 mph max. I picks up this skate helmet from Mitch Cooke. It's nice and light and fits good. I'm hoping that I can put it on in the morning when I get into the buggy and wear it for the day. Anyhow what are people's thoughts? I'm think that maybe we needs helmets at the crawl next year!!!! I already have the same style helmet and wear it when playing hard. Don't wear it when general trail riding but have it with at all times.I agree should be part of the crawl rules.

We'll have to compare helmets. Mine is a snow sports helmet so am curious to see if yours is warmer or heavier than mine. May have to switch if its lighter and cooler. Like Andy I always carry it but only when trying something nasty do I wear it. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I agree on the helmet idea, but as far as the game wardens are concerned they wont allow it. It has to be a dot approved helmet. I know that valley crawl is on private land so that in theory shouldn't be an issue. But traveling from the trailers to trail it could become an issue if they just so happen to be around. I myself have a chopper style lightweight dot approved helmet for me and my passenger.

I'm not that worried about the game wardens. Been doin this for 15 years now, and havin run into them yet. Run into the RCMP a few times and they just say get back into the woods and have fun.
I'm more worried about someone gettin hurt bad in a roll over. We were lucky this year that it didn't end up worse than it did. If buddy had of had all of his harness on he probably wouldn't of bumped his pumpkin.

I see your point of legal compliance, but that isn't what we are going for here. We want protection and no injuries, rules be damned! lol Yeah - I would like to see mandatory helmet use next year. We don't need to wait until something aweful happens to smarten up about this issue. The skate helmets are light and comfy, I skated for 20 years or something, been thru a couple of them, have experience. You can wear them all day. They start to stink like hockey gear is about the only downside of them. They cost between $50/$80, and are avail at any skate shop. Come in different sizes/colors/styles. I could probably get a group rate thru Proskates if enough people expressed interest in going thru one vendor. I'd be willing to handle the buy/collections, etc.

I see what your saying. I like the looks and the extra protection on the sides of the skate helmet compared to the chopper style helmet but if and when the game wardens stop you they do not, and will not care how many of them skate helmets you have gone through. All they care about is are they dot approved. I have already asked the question and was refused. hay you fall off a skate board, roller blades or a bicycle on pavement and they work so why not for our use.

Darren, your point is valid, you are correct in stating the skate helmets are not DOT approved. But the DOT rating is the least of the worries right now. The concern here is protecting ourselves from injury, not legal compliance. (at this point)

Don't 'Game Wardens' deal with hunting wild animals (game), not playing sports and games?
