That makes no sense... a short block doesn't include the heads. What are the "couple other things"? How did the dealer go from not being able to spot an oil leak, to rebuilding the engine?
Got any more details?

X2. Short-block is name of the spinning assembly in the engine block. block/crank/rods/pistons. No heads. lol
I wish I was loaded rich, I'd buy a crappy JK and take it to dealers and record their ridiculous communication break-downs between the techs and service managers, and the customer who is pretending not to know a tire from a fan belt.
Maybe even dress up like a woman and see how bad it gets.

Haha, you really DO need a lady friend don't you?! Don't worry, I've started coaching him. He'll have 17 lady friends in short order. (You too can partake in the program, for only 6 easy payments of $24.95).

Whenever one of my sisters bring their vehicles to a shop for maintenance I always call and ask as many questions as possible, I had one shop try to tell her it would cost $120 for a gasket on a component that has no gasket, it was sealed with RTV... luckily I knew that and when I called them out it was all "Sorry our mistake"

They are replacing the head too.. I meant to say that, from what I understood there were other gaskets gone too, just talking to the service department over the phone, I will know more in detail when I pick it up and get the list if parts.. I took it to another dealer is how I ended up getting the engine replaced, they couldn't understand how anyone could miss the oil leaking either

So haven't got it back, was still making a ticking noise when they got it back together. They are putting new lifters in this week and if that doesn't solve it they are going to order a long block motor and put that in.

I've heard that first Gen cylinder heads on the 3.6 are prone to premature wear and result in a ticking noise. I've also heard they are on the third design to fix this problem. I am only regurgitating what I have found on the internet so I would be interested in hearing if this ticking noise is related. Please post up all repairs they have to do. Thanks Donnie

Got the jeep back, and I was wrong when I said the head, I obviously misunderstood them on the phone when they called me, it was a pourous block that was causeing the issues. They replaced all of the gaskets and put a new short block in. The ticking noise that I was hearing was from the lifters, they replaced all 24

And the factory defects with 2012 and up JK'S just keep adding up... At least they recognized it to be a defect and put a new block in, instead of trying to fix it by globbing a bunch of silicone to a new rear main seal and trying to call it good.

Is that motor aluminum or iron block?
In either case, porous block = low quality casting. It was leaking right thru the metal! That's pretty bad.
At work, we magnaflux castings during manufacturing stage to test for porosity.
