G'day! We previously visited NB/NS/PEI in 2010 and we have planned a return trip the first week of August to explore Cape Breton a bit more (the last trip evolved into a waterfall trip). As we are traveling from Ottawa, my wife suggested we take her Mazda3 to save gas (a valid argument) but I said we should take my JKU since there is more cargo room and it may afford us a bit more adventure on the trip. We plan to arrive in the Meat Cove area on the 2nd, tour around there, then move to the Baddeck area on the 4th, departing on the 6 or 7th. My question to your club is; would some of you be able to make some recommendations on activities/locations (club run or solo) that may be of interest, considering the vehicle option I have made? : ) At this point, my JKU is stock and will not be lifted until the fall, so I would not be looking for anything too extreme. Cheers!

There is an awesome scenic trail on the road into Bay St. Lawrence, you'll pass thru there to get to Meat Cove. (stay away from the cliff up there at night, a couple of people have gone over in the last few years)
Look for '6014 Rd' off Bay St. Lawrence Road. Its gravel to the radio towers. Easy. Its on google maps.
Another easy scenic rd is close to Baddeck 'big harbour rd, to base of Seal Island Bridge.
Both are do-able with zero worries in a stock Jeep. Fog will kill any and all scenery on those roads tho. The Road are still fun. Neither require permissions, the are public right of ways.

Thanks Creepy! I'll certainly put those on my list (an be weary of cliffs!). If there are others that are a bit more technical, I'd welcome those too - particularly if there is water around (river/creek/stream). These will be a good start for sure - let my wife warm up to the idea of not being on a highway Found both of them! Thanks! : )

Oh - the 6014 Rd - go out the way you came in. Its easy 2wd to the radio towers. After that, the road leads down to Money Point Rd. (buried pirate treasure lore) It is very remote and if you get stuck, you are in deep trouble!
I have not explored the switchback trail called Money Point Rd. Was up there a few weeks ago with my towrig. Went past the towers heading north and it got tight and dangerous.

Thanks for that warning. I do have a winch but I don't want to take too many unnecessary risks on a family vacation. Tough to live down a broken axel and stranding us. Tow rig eh?! I'll have to keep that in mind

A 4door Cummins is not a good vehicle to explore a cowpath at the end of the world. Nothing sneaks up on you, the roads are good. Past the towers the road degrades quickly, you prob shouldn't go down there alone. On a really nice day, you can see St. Paul Island - Graveyard of the Gulf. There is a neat museum in Dingwall about the island's history. There is a lighthouse from the Island there. Over 350 shipwrecks and a documented death toll of 3000 lost souls. There are hundreds buried on the island. Ships would wreck in winter, but pack ice would keep rescuers away till spring. People on land would see the fires of surviviors, then go out in spring and bury them. Aspy Bay is one of a few locations thought to be where John Cabot first discovered North America. Lots of nice beaches. Go down Shore Rd by Dingwall, past the 'Oyster' signs, to find an AWESOME hidden beach. You'll know you are in the right place when you see the little pioneer cemetery. Beach is miles long, deserted. There are waterfall hikes in the Park, get some literature or 'net research on spots around Ingonish. Some pics of the stuff I'm talking about in this thread.... nsjc.proboards.com/thread/41318/creepy-cabot-trail-2012The 6014 rd I'm sending you up, is the one on top of the mountains in the pics.

I'll definitely make a point to try those out. Also, thank you for the interesting back story - that will make for some cool info to mention when we arrive. Hopefully we'll get a clear day - but if not, I'll "just wait 5 minutes".

Money Point Rd is 1000% not possible in a stock jku, or really any jku getting threw there. Tried real hard with my two door rubi and no dice. Went back and got the atv. The end of the trail is basically the shore line. Pretty cool place though. Old lighthouse remains or something.
