Hi Guys,
I am very interested in learning how to do some basic welding. Can anyone suggest some training I could take or where to start? I do not aspire to become a Wizard by any means...but I would like to try this out.
Thanks,
Mike

its not hard to do weather you have a mig or a stick...... best thing to do if you have the gear is to grab a flat plate of steel, 1/4" roughly and just try to lay some beads down on it..... now what do you have for a welder? ?? just for shits i'll say you have a 115v mig, with flux core wire..... since its prob the more common welder.... same as i said, get some flat plate and shine it up witht he grinder.... clamp on your ground.... GET YOUR SHIELD..... gettign flashed by a welder is far from being fun..... if you can't see, get a little light lense for the shield(say a #7 or #8 shade, there only about 5$) if you still can't see shine a big spot light on your work.... now for settings on your welder, this is the fun part.... i always weld atleast 1/4 so my heat is wide open.... so if your going to use 1/4 turn up your heat, wide open.... now for your speed.... this all depends on how fast you move your hand, how far your tip is away, ect... i know how i weld so my speed for 1/4" plate is about 3.5 ..... every welder is different too..... so just turn it to something say half way to start, try to weld, if it arcs and stops arcs and stops your speed is too high, turn it down .5 or if its a click ajuster turn it down one click.... try it, and keep doing so..... try to make a 1" long bead before changing your speed though. once you get your speed, remember it, and try a little low and a little high and pick which one is the best.... then lay a few good beads down on the plat.... now once you got that down pat, pick up anouther pieceof plate and weld it to that plate, then get your hamer and try to beat it off..... don't be scared to trip electrical brakers in your bannel or anything like that, it does no harm tothe brakers themself.... just reset it and try again.... now when you chip off the flux from the welds..... put on your shield and open the darken flap......so your looking through a clear lense, the flux will fly everywhere when chiping and it can be very hot...... go try this for an hour and post back....

I've got the kind (think its Arc) where you attach a ground, and have the Big long Stick that is on the other pronged thingy like a booster cable. So Im pretty sure thats a Stick/Arc welder.

.... don't be scared to trip electrical brakers in your bannel or anything like that, it does no harm tothe brakers themself.... just reset it and try again.... ... Actually, it does! It weakens the springs in the breaker and can reduce the load the breaker will take. If you are tripping breakers you should upgrade or you will cause problems in the future.

you have to trip a braker alot inorder to weeken it...... its not going ot be affected by an hour of trying to weld....... so know its not going ot affect the braker...... now as for how you described your welder, look for a welding program in your area.... i know of the local oes but i'm in cape breton...... you need more than just what i could tell you on here ;D but seriously stick are a little harder to use.... now is it a 110v or a 220? if its 110v put it in the back of the truck on the next dump run...... i had one and there useless......

ok so if you notice your lights flickering in Dartmouth tonite, it's just me learning how to run this ol' mig kit....
I'll try my best to not knock out the power grid in Woodlawn.

It's alive! I can weld. Not well, but it's a start. I didn't have much scrap to practice on.
