design takes precidence over welding. a birdsh*t looking weld is still strong enough with a decent design on a bumper, within reason. This is good. Fire pager had me up at 5am got back home - crawled back into bed and laid there working through a functional rear bumper-to-frame attachment in my mind. Thanks for the advice - keep it coming - I do listen & learn.

,but the satisfaction of knowing that you built it, is great. I've been in the biz for almost 20 years now and I passed this stage MANY years ago..... Gimme money!!! ;D ;D All kidding aside you still have to have some talent or a flair for it. I've taught numerous apprentices and some caught on with minimal guidance yet others just plain sucked no matter how hard they tried. The right courses, or training with "the right" person is a great way to start. But there are many things that can't be taught that only comes with experience.

At my longest running job I spent alot of time in the welding shop. The best advice I can give is measure twice many, many times, cut once. Also, when you think up your design in your head and get a rough idea of how long it will take, and how much it's going to cost, double them both. To start at least.

No substitute for practice no matter what you are doing. I did the Mig, Tig, Stick, oxy-acetylene, plate shop thing for 17 years as a Hull Tech in the Navy, and working in shops in the dockyard. If you were doing one thing over a good period of time then it was great, but if you were say TIG welding aluminum for a long period of time and then switched back to stick, it took a while to get back into it...same as anything I guess. Obviously doing anything for 8 hours a day gets trying, but after working side-by-side with guys in ship repair that have been doing it for 20-30 years you can see that practice makes perfect...lol. Oh yeah, then I became an officer and they wouldn't let me in the shop anymore.... ;D. But that was back in my Navy days of course... ;D ;D. Damn, it has almost been a year since I got out...I am going to have a drink now to celebrate... ;D ;D

Have one for me too Shadow... I've got another 30 years before I can even consider retiring. Like one of the older guys in school used to say; I'm still wet behind the ears. LOL

I didn't make them for many of the reasons that were already mentioned in this thread Tim...plus, if you don't have the right tools then it takes sooooooooo much longer, and it is hard to make it look professional. I don't have access to the tools and equipment like I used to and over the years I really didn't need to buy my own as I had access to everything that I ever needed. Granted now that I am out I have a list of things I want for such occasions, but until I build a detached garage that list will have to wait. Also I am not kidding myself...did ya see my bumpers!!!!!!...It would take making quite a few sets of bumpers even to think of getting half as good as Alan is at making them. Oh Yeah, ..... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Great links Jan.
Ever since I saw the awesome bends you made with your bender and after looking at the bending tube 101 link, I think how much of a pain in the ass it was all the times I had to fill pipe with sand, target them, and bend them using a rosebud tip on the torch....gotta love technology... ;D.
