you should be able to find some LED's to fit in that spot nice.
you just need to make a sorta round hole, the rubber grommet with the LED's is pretty forgiving, just pops in and hides the cut.

it has a round 3 1/2 inch oppening already, wouldn't led be not enuf resistance and make them blink to fast???

there are little fixes to do for the fast flash.
you would just have to get a newer flasher. <$10
on my Toy i just had to remove a resistor from the flasher circuitboard.
