Thx for the old pics of it Alan. I am planning on putting it back to the original red colour... and it won't be junked any time soon Once that new frame is under it and with the glass tub she should be good for a long time... (should being the key word in that sentence) I am interested in knowing what the tcase and tranny are now... we have 2 diff stories... either is fine but curious now On a different note I managed to track down the papers for it from the last owner... so it has a legit title I will see how it turns out before I determine how it is registered... off or on-road etc... but I think the plan is to get it ready for the road at this point. Can't believe I am in on this build thread so late haha I went out to put my 4runner back together and boom 2 page thread Lets see if the build is that quick

Whats the Ziptie for? I find it funny that someone would put a ziptie through the hole and not realize there was a problem with the frame. Don't you recognize a structural zip-tie when you see one??? edit 03/16/09 - Paul & I checked last night, definitely a structural zip tie, its not holding anything to the frame. Probably some sort of hi-tensile Jeep approved super zip tie I'm sure....

I crawled under there a few mins ago, tried to stick a magnet to the trans. Not magnetic, so must be the alu T176 with D300 combo.
I also jacked up a front tire and gave it a spin, doesn't seem like there's a LSD in there. I also counted rotations for gear ratio, and seems like 4.10 to me. May have to pull the cover to verify the ratio and the presence of a LSD.

Was talking to Paul... the D300 is nice to have and if it is the T176 it is still a good tranny and from what I am reading is capable of dealing with a V8. If it goes south down the road we will find a T18 with the granny low.. probably start sourcing one soon as a backup anyway. Is there room in a stock length CJ for a dual transfer case set up??
I was showing a few people the picks of it.. I was excited of course... they were like "Oh... thats.... nice" with a blank expression haha

If it is a T176 you could have done worse. Should have a D20, you can tell by the cast output snout vs. the D300's aluminum. From what I've seen the D20 has better ground clearance, but less gear ratio. Also easy to twin stick. There was a Ford T18 on Kijiji, but I think you need some Jeep trans parts to make it work, been a while since I read that stuff. I'll hav to stop by and see it sometime.

the bell on the 176 will bolt up a jeep or ford T18.
i've got one sitting outside if you want to take a look. (t18)

Makes sense... the shifter issues you see are very common on the t-176.... would be very rare for a t-18 to act like that. The t-176 is a nice working tranny when it's working properly... quite smooth. It's just not the toughest... but still highly useable.

I did a little poking around today... Yup, there is a limited slip in there! Also, notice the 41-10 stamped on the ring gear, so 4:10 gears. Took the inspection cover off the trans, defiantly the T176 (or 177 or 178??) and dana 300. Oddly enough, as soon as the cover came off, the thing shifts just fine. I think its fouling on the shift boot! The t-case is still hard to shift, but i can see the linkage hitting against the body. Paul
