What are your thoughts on studded winter tires? Like / Dislike? Do the tires have to be new in order to get them studded? I have a set that are pre-pitted for studs but they have about 4000km on them - would this be a problem?
Thanks,
MC

I ran studded winter tires for a winter on my TJ and loved them. As far as I know, you cannot get a used tire studded.

I was lookin at this on the NBJC board and basically most said that they have to be new tires cuz the studs would be too long on a used tire and would possibly cause them to rupture the inner surface of the tire and therefore makin the tire useless@!!!! Chek out the discussion on their board for all comments!!

I've always thought the reason for not being able to stud used tires was in case tiny rocks got into the holes where studs go. When a stud was then put in, it would push the rock into the carcass of the tire, and possibly damage it.
Running studs now on the grand. Love them. Very little road noise in a grand anyway, so the studs weren't a big deal. Even if there was more noise, I'd run them.

AND they make the coolest marks on the pavement IF you were to do a burnout... or 4. Actually this is only hearsay. Have never done a burnout myself.

I've had them on everything I have run except the current Jeeps, loved them and would have them again.

I run studded winters on my ZJ. My wife would not drive anything w/o studs now. They few extra dollars are worth our peace of mind. I had a demo ZJ for years and the a/s tires literally scared me.

You can get a "greenline" tire that has steel imbedded in the tread. Different than studs as it wears down with the tires, where a stud wears out this does not. Also it doesn't apply to the studded tire dates that you have to comply with. My folks run them on there passenger cars and swear by them. I am considering them for the Jeep.
