Hey guys and gals ;D
Not sure but I think this qualifies as a tech question.
I was wondering if someone could take the time to explain all the acronyms and terms used in describing the components on the Jeeps. Like.....Dana's, Lockrite, Different gear ratios, Warn 8374, AX5, modified No-Slip,...etc.
Sometimes I am lost reading the signatures on the posts.
Remember...I am a nOOb...........lol
Cheers Gary

Dana - Dana/Spicer Corp, makers of axles, transfer cases, u-joints, etc. Most often refering to the axles under a Jeep (most all of them have a dana 30 front, and many have a dana 35 rear)
Lockrite - a brand of differential locker that just replaces the gears inside the differential, as opposed to a full case locker (Detroit e.g.) that replaces the entire diff. This type is often called a lunch box locker. The original gears inside the diff allow the axles (wheels) to freely spin at different speeds for cornering, so when you get stuck, the wheel with least traction is going to spin. A locker still lets the wheels spin at different speeds for cornering, but not as smoothly, and locks them together when you need traction in both.
Differential Gear Ratios - the ratio of the gears (ring and pinion) inside your axles. The ratio is the number of turns your driveshaft turns to make the axle (wheel) turn once. 3.07:1, 3.55, 4.11, etc.
Warn 8274 - the big bad ass winch you see sticking up in the front of many Jeeps (like in the pic of mine). 8000 lbs. pull and fast line speed.
AX5, AX15 - Asain Warner manual transmissions found in newer Jeeps. The 5 is lighter duty than the 15.
Modified No-Slip - a type of limited slip differential that has been modified to work better.
Hope that helps, just ask if you need to know more.

First off, I am by no means an expert on this stuff - I wil likely have errors below, so others will chime in to fill in blanks and correct me I'm sure. As for the links, well, the opinions will vary on the info present at thos elinks, but it does give some basicly useful info to get you started on the reading. Dana's - Dana is an axle manufacturer - they make items such as the Dana 30 front axle (found on TJ's Cherokee's, etc.), D-35 rear axle, D-44 (if you find one, buy it!!!), D-60, D-70 and others. Bigger the number, the beefier the axles, basically - but beef adds size and weight. Lockrite - a brand name of locker - can't recall who makes it, but it's function is to lock the axle shafts together to ensure both tires turn when applying power in low traction situations - it's your buddy! Different gear ratios - this refers to changing gear ratios, generally, in your axles. From the factory, the drivetrain is a system designed for everyday use and economy. We often change these gears to get better torque application off-road. This is especially useful if you upgrade to larger tires. A bigger diamter tire has the effect of changing your stock gearing, so changin gthe gear ratios in the axles will put you back into a more stock configuration - better fuel economy, driveability, etc. These will be shown by numbers such as 3.07, 3.55, 4.10, 4.10 and you'll hear break-point and carriers associted with these conversations - I'll let others who can better explain those terms take that end father for ya. Warn 8374 - a type of winch used for self recovery or recovery of others - it's a tough, tough, strong, reliable unit - expensive and commands a high price used and not working. If you find one at a decent price, kits are available to refurbish them and make them good as new - great find if you can snag one! AX5 - I think you mean AX-15 - it's a type of manual transmission used by Jeep - it's a 5 spd - again, others can attest to reliablity, strength, etc. modified No-Slip - not sure - I know No-Slip is, again, a traction aid similar to the Lockrite, just does it's job differently. When talking about thes ehtings, there's a few categories they fall into: Limited Slip - designed to allow some slipping on road, very easy to live with, low on the bad-habits scale. A LSD (limited slip differential) will allow a bit of slippage to occur allow each tire to trace a route through a turn while disapating any enrgy built up as a result of the differences in distance each tires travels allow the arc of the turn. When traction is needed, the system (there's a bunch of differnet way to do it) allpies pressure to "force" torque to both tires on the axle. Lockers - designed for maximum transfer of torque at the expense of polite behavior. You may sometimes notice tires squealing when driving a locker equipped vehicle around tight turns. Since the axles are locked, they turn at the same speed, but the tires travel different distances while making the turn - the squeal is the tire letting go and releasing the built up binding energy between the axles (left side and right side). HTH's with the items you mentioned. AX5 - I think you mean AX-15 well if you did mean the AX-5, its the light duty version of the AX-15, like alan said ;D
