Hi all, my first post here is regarding my 86 Jeep Wagoneer. I am slowly restoring it and have developed a horrible knock in the 2.8L V-6 that I have been unable to diagnose. What I was wondering is if anyone knows if it can be done, how hard is it to switch from the 2.8 over to a I6? I can find lots of info on 2.8L to 3.4L but no info in I6. I don't want this to be a major swap out but if It's easy enough I think I'd be better off with the I6 than a new 2.8 or 3.4? Opinions?? TIA

Good luck with the project. The 2.8 does not have a good rep; you know this if you have researched the engine. My opinion is sell it or part it and start with a 4 liter model. This way you are starting on "level" ground with other XJs. Finding parts for a 4liter is fairly easy etc. Why spend money to power up a 2.8 to a 3.4 when you could spend the money on a 4liter right off the get go. Again my opinion and good luck.

Thanks, That's what I am fearing, already have alot of money/time invested in this XJ, had hoped to keep the loaded model, I was just about finished the body when the engine started acting up. Awesome vehicle, shame it didn't come with the I6. Here is a picture mid restore Shawn nsflyrods.tripod.com/Pictures/86_Wagoneer_Ltd

I've read a lot of good things online about the 3.4L swap. It's supposed to be relatively easy, and the 3.4L is common enough to find parts for.
I don't know how the torque band would be on it though.

Part it out if you want to. Keep the seats etc. I love the power stuff too, I have a ZJ Ltd. But are you more interested in a good running JEEP or in electric windows?A lot of the stuff is saleable/reuseable. Doors, axles etc should fit a newer 4 liter XJ. I see lots of them for sale 87 to 92s are decently cheap. Better yet, dump it while it still runs and get a few bucks back. Move on.

I do agree with that at all....................as my name states I am a 84 wagoneer owner ....and if the body is in good shape dont toss her she is well worth the time it will take to upgrade her.........if you want to know more drop me a pm or an e-mail and lets chat.... these other XJ types just dont understand!!

Littlered, Body wise she wasn't too bad, typical rust ahead of the rear wheels and under the fender extensions. If you look at the picture back a few posts ago, most of the fill you see is where the trim for the fake wood came off (not a job I care to do EVER again). I really love the vehicle and dream of finding a Loaded Limited (most likely from the southern states) Low milage & in mint condition and building her with a stroker Never again with the 2.8, it was a superb engine in my Firebird but i don't know what happened in the Jeep, perhaps they used the leftovers or something?

As a man who has a personal fetish for woodgrained JEEPs, I'm wounded by those comments.

Hey Troutbum. The question you need to ask yourself is this. How much do i like my jeep?If this is what you want then go for it,do the swap.I have an 88 cherokee, american model. Its loaded, all leather and power everything, but rough.Ask anyone who has seen it.Its gonna be costly to get done what i want, needs brake work, some body work, interior work. The body is actually pretty good.Just needs a fender and a hole in the rear quarter panel.Rockers are almost like new.I guess the point im triing to make is ,I like my jeep,i woulnt sell it to buy another.Well, maybe a grand. The engine is a 4.0 with almost 500,000 ks and still runs decent. Its not the cost thats important,Its what YOUwant, thats important. Some non jeep owners look at my jeep and say to me.Why bother?Im not sure why sometimes.I guess its a jeep thing,im beginning to understand, My advice to you,Do it,dont worry about what other people think cause they dont understand, :)Talk to Lance,(lilredwagoneer).Ive seen pics of his in stock form and wheeled with him as it is now.Its come along way,but im sure he will tell you it was worth it.Anyway,Thats enough babbling for me,take care, merry christmas, and most important happy jeeping.later steve ;D
