Did it Christmas eve, a little more intense than expected, changed input spline, & front out put yoke, and several u-joints, and the shifter thing didn't quite work out, had to completely change the linkage setup, it now goes directly from the shifter to the t-case, eliminating one of the linkage rods, and 2 of the pivot points, this set up mostly works but once in 4-low it needs hammer assistance to go back to 4-h etc. If anyone can help me I have a continous noise while driving, maybe a bearing, maybe the t-case chain spining on the rear output shaft, maybe the t-case lub pump, I havn't investigated it much yet but I have put around 1000km on it since then NO KATSTROPHIE YET, anyway it is nice to drive on the dry highway in only 2 wheel drive never mind the money it saved me,
1000km = $120 travelin' at a liberal speed. atleast 15% better mileage!

Heheh ... Christmas Eve transfer case swap ... i can just see all of the greasy fingerprints on all of the prezzies under the tree. For what it's worth ... I recently had APJ's weld a new floor in my XJ. I took most of the interior out of it myself before dropping it off (to save a few $'s) and I have yet to re-install the interior stuff. (Floor is awesome, BTW) Well, last Thursday night I drove to Moncton (to the Outlaws) for Christmas and had a scary 'whirring' noise similar to what I imagine you are hearing. Most noticable above 90km/h on decel (off the gas), and it sounds like it's coming right from the auto shifter stick. I pulled into Truro in hopes of finding a muffler shop open to check my 231's fluid level but I couldn't find an open shop. Checking my transfer case fluid was a back burner thing on my list of things-to-do and when I heard that noise on the highway I had a sinking feeling in my gut. A lot of humming and hawing and regular Fish 'n Chip plate from Deluxe Fish 'n Chips later and I was back on the highway with crossed fingers. All I could hear for the rest of the drive was that damn noise - despite constant Christmas chattering from the wife . Christmas Eve morning I got an oil/filter/lube done at Wonder Auto in Riverview, NB and had them change/flush my 231. Good guys at that shop (I usually change fluids in all of my vehicles myself - but I'd recommend these guys to anyone). The probably stock TC fluid that was in there was a tad low and expectedly looked like a mixture of black coffee and snot. Fresh clean fluid give peace of mind . The verdict? I still have the noise . While up on the hoist, I noticed that my cat. converter heat shield is hanging by a thread and might be the source of my mysterious noise. (Anyone know if I can safely yank that heat shield? Best place to get a new cat?). If it's not the cat heat sheild, I'm hoping the noise is normal and I just notice it now because I have no center console (or much interior at all) or perhaps that before I got my new floor there were so many holes/other noises that I couldn't hear it and now that it's quiet in the cab I can hear it better. Anyone else notice such noise? Better yet ... anyone else ever notice such noise and find the source?

My XJ does not have a cat shield on it. It seems to be OK. No problems in almost 3 years that I have had it.

Hey Donair how much did it cost to get your floor redone at APJs? I need to get mine done and a gestimation would set me in the right direction.

Hey BigWilly ... I pm'd you.
I would imagine floor jobs (and prices) are quite dependant on how bad a particular floor is.
I would not want me posting the details of my floor job here to lead to people reading it and expecting unrealistic things from APJ's ... or ... for them to be turned off of getting work done there because of anything I typed that could be mis-read.
I will say I am 100% completely satisfied with all the work they've ever done on my Jeep and they are my #1 choice for Jeep work. I love my new floor ;D.
Now ... back to our regularly scheduled program ... anyone else with tc noise?

is there any play at the output? does the shifter shake when it makes that noise?
I dont know the internals of that t-case but am wondering if it has an internal u-joint?

That noise is prolly the chain stetched and slappin round in the case as it turns!
They make horrible sounds when that happens.....
Just my $.02 worth! Justin

No internal u-joint in this case, I ll have to check for play on the out put shafts again though, although I checked them once and they were good.
it is defintely not the chain, Ive seen stretched chains! it is not really that loud, if I had to compare it to something I would say it sounds like a small branch continually rubbing against the driveshaft, and as the suspension compresses it fades away, and also if you do the jiggle test to the shifter, it fades in and out!
