What transmission to you have? Is this a new problem? I can't shift into 1st either, but that's because my 1st gear is unsycronised.

try double clutching. dumptruckin! My t150 was the same. couldn't downshift into first without hitting neutral for a second.
I think it's a worn syncro problem.
I was gonna make an unsyncronized 1st joke, but Bill beat me to it.

Try changing the trans fluid. I swore the synchros were gone in my last ford ranger, but a fluid change did it a world of good. The synchros don't usually go out overnight, they wear over time.

Is it outside? Could be water in the tranny causing the gear oil to need to be changed as mentioned.
The water will freeze creating a 80w90 sludge that doesn't promote great shifting... Otherwise, like Jan said, you're looking at syncros.

I put a fluid additive in my AX15. In cold weather I could not shift into second. It made a big difference. I used a Lucas product and synthetic fluid. I have since heard good and bad things about going this route.
