Just wondering what year Taurus I should source an electric fan from. I also assume I should get the Relay from that car as well?

hey. 90-95 3.8 Taurus/Sable. specify "2 speed fan", or "3 wire connector fan" - same thing.
I can send you pics from home this evening. I chose to run a k-car thermoswitch in the upper rad hose and ford starter relays. Your more "electrical" than me, maybe you can make the stock relays/switch work.
I've got diagrams and research bookmarked at home. Also have a good fan with very slightly cracked housing you could use for mock up.
just call a junkyard and get one pulled for you. mine was $45, roomie's for 350 s-10 was $50, both from Kinsmen's. they are dime a dozen, it hasn't caught on here yet that they will cool a big block in the desert.
my thermoswitch cycles the fan a bit too much, I wish it would come on "hotter", Ken is talking to someone about making a circuit board to make it adjustable.
On a side note: a lot of peeps are worried about the load these things pull, I have had no issues whatsoever with voltage/amp spikes or drops. that is using 8awg wire and 85A relays, with 80A fuse.

Found a fan for $35. Just need to look at how the fan will engage. I like the idea of putting a sensor in the upper rad hose. Just need to find such a device. Also I've heard these do not need a relay, however I'd like to be able to disable/enable this so I can turn it off for water crossings and so on.

. Also I've heard these do not need a relay, Unless the fan is to run 100% of the time (till the battery is flat) it will need switching and that means a relay since regular switches can't handle the load nor can the thermo switches John

well if you want to turn it off, that means a switch in the cab. no relay means all those amps running from the battery into the cab, thru the tiny switch, then back out to the fan. try to find a small switch rated for 80A. If you do, it will cost more than the relay. sure sure, some guy somewhere is doing it with speaker wire and no relay. that doesn't make it good. assuming you are ditching the mech. fan, this will be your only source of cooling. it must be set up correctly to be reliable. mine is fused, on 2 completely different circuits for high and low, with thier own relay each. I even have a spare fan motor (which bolt on really easy, BTW) So I can blow a motor, a relay, and a fuse, and still be cool. It has one 3-pos switch in the cab. 1: on low with ign, and if temp switch is made - (fully automatic) 2: off 3: on high with ign, no temp switch. (manual) I could go on......but you get the idea. This is one of my favorite mods on my zj. the thermoswitch. exaust tube with pipe fitting for k-car switch. dense hi-temp epoxy blobbed on. switch still unscrews tho. weather sealed connectors, fuse box, 2 relays on fender beside batt. Grand rad. See how you can just take out the little motor in the center for a spare?

Hey guys I'm gonna design a user definable, fan control with or without relays, lemme know what youd rather, say low speed turn on at 50 c and high turn on @ 80, 90 100, 110 C, if this sounds interesting lemme know, it will come with a calibrated temp sensor, and a small board. it'll take about 3-4 weeks in my spare time?
the more I make the cheaper it'll be, not lookin to make a profit here, but I'm sure that materials alone will be around $25-35 to make1-5 set-ups.
lemme know if there is any interest

me too.
I'd want low speed tuning on at 90-95ish, shut off at 80? maybe. I'll have to try to figure out when it's coming on now.

well if ya all can, figure out what ya want, temps and speeds, I'll see if I can come up with a happy medium, or just make it more defineable,
more definable= more parts
more defineable=$

Would it be possible to be adjustable, via a rheostat?
Personally, 80 would probably work well for me. Single speed fan.

thought it through a little farther, it would be possible to tune through a gain pot, for either speed one for high one for low, just adds a few more steps on the hardware side, not a big deal but it is sounding more like the $35 dollar range.

I could go for some adjustability. maybe come on from 80, to keep the carb'ed v8's cool, adjustable up to 95ish for the injected.
then do you need to have adjustable "off" too?
$35 is no problem for such a device.

I'd be interested too. I plan to upgrade to a Taurus fan before summer.

cool.
will this thingy have to be waterproof or in the cab? just thinking where to mount it.
and what does/will the coolant sensor look like?
