Well the new house we bought in Aug which is supposed to be an energy efficient R2000 home is anything but...
Been trying to figure out why the house used 6069kwh ($800 bucks) of power from Nov 24 to Jan 28 (63 days)
Had NSP out to see about thermal storage and even he said that was a lot for the layout of the house and we should be in the $500 - $600 every two months, $600 if it was really cold. Oh and he said at the rate of power it is using..my march bill will be close to a grand.
So had an energy audit done, nothing wrong with the house construction, no air leaks, nothing. Its super tight, R50 in the ceiling and R20 (i think is what he said) in the walls, basement floor is insulated and has a vapor barrier layer. ICF foundation, 2x6 walls.
So I called NSP to talk to there energy adviser..well that was a waste of time..all she basically told me was that i used less then the previous owners during the same time last year and the year before...Well duh..they had a huge hot tub and he had 5 or 6 deep freezers....
So the house is 2020sq ft of living space and it looks like its gonna cost about $4500 a year for heat and power..to me that's high..
Thermostats are all digital and set to 20* and down to 17* at night.
So has anyone fought with NSP to come out and have there meter replaced?
At this rate I'll be in the poor house..you might see a jeep for sale if I don't get this fixed.

The numbers sound about right for what I was paying for my 1800 sq/ft house on electric. I know a lot of mine went through the hot water heater, when I went from a 60 gallon tank down to a 40 the bill went up, now the furnace is heating the hot water and the electric HW heater is used as a storage/keep warm tank and my meter is hardly moving. My well is 175ft deep and the water comes into the house at about 4 degrees so it didn't take much to cool off the entire tank...load of wash, shower, dishwasher.

Also, check what your water heater is set to, turning mine down to 110 made quite a difference, they are commonly set to 140.

How old is your house? this one is only 7 years old..even my fathers place which is 15 years old..and 2800 sq/ft, set to 20* ran a power bill of only 530 for the same period..his total last year was $2700.
House has a 60g HW, tested the elements last night and its working fine.
After talking to various people, and the R2000 people..they have all said something isn't right, that the house should not be consuming that much power. Only one to say that it was right is NSP
Yeah i checked that too, I think its at 55*C

Mine is about 30 years old and was not R2000, so I guess your's should be much lower than it is.
What was your bill like before you turned on the heat?

What do you have for heat? I have a heat pump but burn about 3 cord of wood a year, 40 gal hot water tank, house is lit up like walmart parking lot every night and pay a budget of $182 every month. Heat pump thermostat stays at 69 24/7 and we use a little AC in the summer. My budget has been as high as $230 a month in the past. House is 1300 square feet and the basement is mostly heated, about 1100 square feet. One of my apartments has oil heat, I watched the tank go down 1/4 in less than two weeks during that cold snap. It is rare for a meter to have a problem, but it's possible. Keep after them if you think it's that.

ours is about 35 years old, 2x4 construction and 18" of insulation in the attic - (I added 12" when we moved in) - our first winter was $300-600 per month on electric heat and after insulating the attic, new windows and doors, siding with an 1" of insulation underneath and mostly burning wood the bill is $125/month averaged all year - something definetly wrong with yours
