the rear suspension is a walking beam and some rubber blocks. You can't sack it out. OK, wha??

um....walking beam goes from axle to axle on each side. It pivots below frame mount in the center between tandem tires where the bogey rubbers are. rubber blocks on the frame keep the walking beam from hitting frame when moving. so in effect, the only suspension are huge bumpstops for the ends of the walking beams, and the tires.
Now i'm no heavy duty mechanic...i was just peeking under there.

they use the walking beam design on most heavier-duty trucks, to keep things simple, yet effective. when you have a big beam and a couple chunks of rubber, you won't have much suspension or atriculation, but the fact that there are no springs to crack or bend (or torque arms to bend, or bushings to replace or trunnions to wear out) obliterates the down-sides. also, think about it this way, when you have 40,000 on the back end of that truck, rubber isn't gonna feel all that soft.

come to think of it, wasn't there pics of rock-crawler with a huge version of this type of suspension? Had hydraulic motors on each tire, and the beam conected the front and rear sheels on each side of the rig, with big air shocks or something.
Anyway, WAAAAAAAY OT for Jan's shop thread...

its like that pic, but no upper bags or the beam they are on. walking beam is directly mounted to frame.
I should walk over and look again.

No Jan, you're right, they do have a solid chunk of rubber. an Autocar like that was most likely built in the 60's or maybe early 70's, they didn't use air suspension, it was all rubber or springs. think upside-down teerer-totter with the base attached to the frame, and instead of childrens' feet against the ground(or frame in this case) there is a block of rubber. I need a photoshop artist!

oh ok. i was saying the blocks were on that lower beam. oops. i shoulda took a pic. that setup is the same as the Construcktor, i was describing it wrong. Anyway, there is no sacking out to be had. You are either carrying your load, or the frame is broken in half. what a friggin name, i love that. cons-TRUCK-tor. Soooo '70's.
