I'd be looking at geothermal. I'll be installing a ductless heat pump in a year or 2 to help with heat and a/c on the top floor as I don't need a/c in any other part of the house.
They provide a 3 to 1 return on power used and the technology is getting better every year.

Very cool fuel comparison calculator; hearth.com/econtent/index.php/articles/fuel_cost_comparison_calculator/Looks like I'm doomed to burn wood. LOL If that's the case then I'd like to have the boiler in the garage. That way the mess is out of the house, and the garage is heated as a bonus. I could always have an extention off the back of the garage semi-open for wood storage.

Based on what they say there, I'll be saving over 50% with my new oil furnace over electric heat

The thing that turns me off about geothermal is the initial cost. If you plan on being in your house for 40+ years, heck yeah! Other than that I think it's hard to beat an efficient furnace and good insulation. Lots of options whatever you decide. In the end, it's your house G, do as you please. Maybe start a rabbit farm and burn them, hahaha. (happy now bill ;D )

Ok, just got an e-mail from someone who does the geothermal thing. He's saying that it takes 1/4 the electricity as a electric only system. Based on the calculator I posted earlier, hardwood cost 1/3 what an electric only system would.
So, once I get prices for installed systems, it should be a good base for comparison.
Oh, on a side note I've been looking at pellet and corn boilers. Just some quick math;
Corn, @ $9.50/55lbs = $0.17/lb producing 6924BTU or 40,729btu/1$
hardwood pellets, @ $6.30/40lbs=$0.16/lb producing 7995BTU or 49,969btu/1$

I have a Geothermal heatpump installed (finally) and indeed my home heating costs for this year compared to last (thus far) are about 1/3rd - and I have yet to insulate properly and get my heat recovery coil plumbed in to heat my in-floor/make some domestic hot water heat off of.

also, look into a furnace that can burn the #2 pellets. if it can handle the ash, the lower quality pellets are cheaper

pellet stoves are a bag a day unless its really cold and then it'll be two per day most stoves can't handle anything but the ideal pellet and will clog on anything else also remember its a small continuous fire, no sudden bursts of heat like a good roaring wood stove fire
