Howdy,
I've been toying with this for a bit. I listen to music all the time. In the shop I've always had crapper players that would fill the airspace but nothing ever fancy enough to worry about or to blow my mind.
Currently I'm rocking a shitty Sony 3-disc mini bookshelf hand-me-down (that isn't really that mini at all). It was given to me because the cd player was hit or miss. Shortly after taking up permanent residence in my tiny lightly used shop the cd player crapped the bed for good. Hello Q104, meh. About a year ago I bought an iPod touch and a wireless FM transmitter and have been able to satisfy my ears with that. But it kinda sucks.
I've thought about picking up some cheapo amp & speakers off kijiji and trying to figure out a way to add an iPod dock. I've also toyed with setting up a PC (and network) in my shop so I could listen via it. My living room home theater component system is soon due to be upgraded (replaced) so I might chuck that down there.
So, NSJC shop'rs ... how do you enjoy tunes while working?
Thx!

Ipod with wireless FM sender to old ghetto blaster. No charging for the Ipod, it charges when driving in the truck. I had a little dock station that was just loud enough and charged the Ipod, but it broke after heavy use.
I've always thought an Ipod geared into a big fat kijiji amp and ancient floor speakers (mounted up in the corner of ceiling) would rock. like $50 in gear from kijiji, big and old as you can find.
some people hate the Fm senders, not high quality sound. i don't listen to Mozart, so it doesn't matter.

Sirius satellite radio using FM to a small old ghetto blaster. Good enough for the work shop, don't want it too loud with customers coming in.
I've got a 3 CD bookshelf stereo in the big shop at home, just tuned into the St. John classic rock station.

Hi, my choice is the Ridid Job-Site radio (R8408) available at Home Depot. It has an I Pod compartment to keep it secure and dust free. Has good sound. Very heavy duty. Has a cage to prevent damage if it falls off shelf. Thus the name Job Site. Weighs about 30lbs.
But for superior sound, my pick is Tivoli Audio Model One. This will rival and maybe beat Bose. Available at Glubes Dartmouth NS. It has an Aux input for I Pod. Check out reviews. This radio can bring in distant FM sations with included external antenna. May be too nice for the shop, but if you want the best sound, this is it.
Later.......

when i think of it, i turn on the old transistor radio my dad built 30+ years ago when I'm out in the shop. I sometimes wonder if there is any point, as I make enough noise I usually can't hear anything but the ringing in my ears. so when the radio is on, it is 89.3, K-rock, even though it sucks, but its the only station that comes in clear inside of our uninsulated, 2x4 construction, barn shop.

Thanks gang ... this is important! Those Bose things are pricey! In-laws have the Wave radio and it does sound really nice ... A bit of poking around the FS site has me thinking the old school amp/speakers with one of these Dynex dock might be the ticket. 30+year old homemade transistor radio? That's very cool. thx ps - Scott have you ever listened to Baroness or Mastodon? You might like 'em ... more metal than stoner rock though. thx!

I use an old 70's reciever/amp. It has Left/Right audio inputs for a tape deck or 8-track or... an iPod! I bought a $5 cord from future shop that goes from a headphone jack to Left/Right audio RCA's. So basically any stereo with L/R RCA inputs will work; cheap and simple.
I use my old ipod; sure it doesn't charge, but it lasts like 30hrs anyway. It cranks and I have the bulky stereo mounted up on a shelf out of the way with the iPod hanging down. She's only a wee 2Gig iPod so I end up charging it when I change the play list.
I tried the FM transciever and it sucked... traded it in for the $5 cord and got the rest of my money back, lol.

Transistors.... I've got that beat, there's an old tube radio in the attic of the shop I used to listen to. Cord hangs down by a plug in the shop, plug it in and after the tubes warm up, you've got music! (just the local AM country though)

(just the local AM country though) My buddy has an ancient guitar amp that we used to call 'the diesel', cause you had to wait for it to warm up a bit before you got tunes. like glowplugs. so in this thread we've got 80G Ipods and Iphones downloading music to tube radios from the 40's. lol typical Jeepers. "this is fine, it still works"

RCA amp 400watt(?) With an RCA DVD played used for CDs,dual 3' high floor speakers with quad 6" woofers with dual 2" tweeters mounted on the ceiling out of the way. Dual tape deck (for dem-dare Kaaahsetts ) I usually have a local old rock station(98.3FM)playing. Garth, Zepplin, Tom Petty, Metallica... really any old rock. There is a lot of late 80's/early 90's dance music too (Black Box, C+C ) *hears eyes rolling* and a wack of early Harry Connick jr.
