Looking to pour a 30-30 slab this summer/fall for my future shop, no idea how much its goin to cost or how thick i should frame it in at.
I would guess do a class A fill then pour over that?

check with your inspector, in our county, anything over 600 sq' has to be engineered.. if your getting it engineered, they will tell you what you need to have.
ours, have been 12" deep, in 12", then tapered up to 6" thick, about 4' from the edge, then continue the 6" for the rest of the slab. we had 4 rows of 1/2" rebar around the outside, tied to sturup's, that are tied to 6"x6" x10ga mesh.... you'd be better with rock, over class A, rock will give you some drainage, but it depends on the site. also, topsoil should be removed, before fill is added, and you want really good drainage, or you will have a slab that wicks water up inside.

we lucked out on the engineering, we had a friend who owed us a favor lol

They don't have to be engineered if it's on a 4' frost wall the last time I checked.

Oh I have awesome soil, it was all a farmers field way back. When I had my new well line put it, it dug up soo easy and that was 12 feet down.
Ya I'll have look into what would be cheaper as I can't afford to do it all once.

you can put in the frost wall, then build on top of it. pour your floor inside at a later date
another option, build a pole barn. timbers( power poles) are sunk into the ground 4-6 feet, these carry the roof. the walls are strapped and attached to the poles. then a floor can be poured at a later date

If you end up doing your slab Matt, Think about putting some PEx down into it.. AT least this way you have the option to do infloor heat later. Geothermal pump to heat the water for your floor heat and you'll save $$ overall.. It's not a cheap setup, but once done, you'll be glad you did. but an old furnace or wood heat works too lol..
I know here in NB(well Moncton anyway), any slab over 24x26 has to be engineered unless on a frost wall.
