So I picked up this little trailer last fall for dirt cheap... couldn't pass it up. It'd been bastardized with a 1 7/8" ball instead of the pintle, someone cut their own version of a tailgate into it, it's got 3 layers of different colored paint, and I'm not sure if it came with a hand brake... but there's none there now. LOL The plan is to convert it back to pintle, sling some XMLs on a 14 bolt axle under (spring over), make her dump capable, and paint 'er up. This was intended to be a winter project... but I just realized the other day that winter's pretty well 1/2 over and I've barely started. So hopefully I'll get after it and see some progress. I'm still not sure if I should start over new or build this one up. It's intended use is for rock and gravel... so not too sure if the current frame is going to hold up. However, I'm a wannabe fabricator, so keeping what's there would be much easier. So before we begin, I figured I'd show off my other trailer; Before After Couple shots; Donor axle XMLs and cut down box liner Run flats cut out of the XMLs (what a PITA!) Started taking the axle appart the other day... pics to follow.

Why are you using a 14 bolt for the axle ? Wouldn't the ground clearance be low ? Are you able to cut out the centre section , and tube it all the way across ? I look forward to the build . Off road trailers kick ass !

How come you want the pintle? The ability to twist? They work well but are frigging noisy and annnoying...

So started taking 'er apart. Pulled the axle shaft Snap ring, keyway, locking nut, then hub & drum assembly Shoe assembly Backing plate Stripped all old brackets At this point the logical step would have been to flip the axle and repeat on the other side.... well this pig is still a heavy biatch with all this off, so I skipped a step to make it a little easier to handle Had to shuffle things around to keep the trailer level drained some more oil Breathed enough rust dust for one day, despite wearing this... so more the come later

So, there are a couple issues that I want to solve regarding the rear section of the trailer. 1. The tailgate and hardware are flimsy... and half a$$ cut out 2. The original design has a pipe bolted across to brace the sides 3. I want the tailgate removable, and perhaps able to dump like a dump truck. So, my solution is to cut out the remainder of the back wall... then weld square tubing along the inside with a gusset at the bottom. Like this; I figure the new tailgate could either have ends made of chanel, or square tubing with the outer side cut out that would slide over the trailer's square tubing (locking it in place)... or a gate that had two sets of spring loaded pins top and bottom. The first idea might be too hard to remove when loaded, and the 2nd might be harder to keep a tight seal so gravel doesn't fall out. Thoughts?

If it were me i would do the pin design , easier to operate and remove .
I would think if you can come up with something like the 2 pins on the top and the two on the bottom similar to the gate lock on a dump truck would keep it tighter and easier to un lock with weight against it .

You need one of these instead of a hitch: Now that's cool and looks build-able with some tube and spring bushings . Should be quiet,tight and rebuildable.

I'm sure there are several people here who could fab one from just that pic. Can a U-joint take that kind of load? I mean, it's ment to take rotational force, could it take two sets of cups pulled one way and the other set the other way? A broken axle shaft and u-joint would be a great start to something like this. I'm guilty in other areas, but I'm thinking using something that's not rated's not the best idea. PS: I'm trying to get away from having others fab for me. A welder is coming soon!
