Well, I figured it out. Can you? All the info was there from the first picture.....I didn't see any bad-ass know-it-all trolls jumping out of the gate to identify the blatant error. Which leads me to believe you don't know shit until you are lead by the nose and can google it. bitches. ;D Here is what I took apart when I recieved the rig, weeks ago. it had a bad seal, and i found the bearing was gone. the tire was floppy. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

Can you guess? Bearing was installed backwards. I put the new bearing back in the same way. No wonder it had a bad seal! some old AMC20 axles bearing is flipped other way, race is closer to wheel, to butt against retainer plate/outer seal. The way it was setup, and then I copied it, was the orientation for a C-clip axle!!!! There was nothing holding it in!!! Egads! Hayne's actually good for something, sorta see it there - Back to the lockring debate - the ruined inner race didn't move, and there aren't any lockrings on those old axles. This axle falling out had NOTHING to do with no lockring. I'm gonna flip the new bearing around, and frig the lockring again! Muahahahah!

lol... lovely. I do seem to remember pressing on a bearing before without the race, only to have to do it again properly once upon a time...

That pic has been up for weeks, anyone could have picked up on it. I'm eager to share this knowledge, because my threads are used as reference material. I don't want a big fawkup hanging there. Its really easy to do, if all you've ever worked on was C-clip axles. Anyone coming from a TJ, YJ, XJ, ZJ could very likely make this error on thier CJ and get out on the road with it, like I did. I'm supposed to know what I'm doing, and it slipped right by. So everyone should be warned, there are more CJ's coming into the club. This has been a public service announcement.

Dam D20 with ass backwards bearings, ya I definitely didn't clue in on the earlier posts. I actually thought it was a D44, cause you were talking about the locking ring. Those bearings make me think twice every time I see them on the 20, which is about once a year.

Yup, its and AMC20 with a truss and aftermarket one-piece axles.
Old, non c-clip XJ's would have the same bearing orientation, and D44's too, shouldn't they? Anything without a c-clip is going to have the bearing race out towards the wheel, not in the housing.
C-clips axles will install the race in the housing.

I could be wrong but the model 20 setup is made that way to hold the axle in because it doesn't have C clips. Does your TJ D44 have C clips? You guys are seriously making me reconsider ditching the Toy axle for the model 20. ;D

No clips on the iron D44's. Has a bearing retainer plate at the wheel, like AMC20. I accepted 2 more Toy axles into my pile this afternoon. They are superior in many regards.

No clips on the iron D44's. Has a bearing retainer plate at the wheel to press on the outer race, thus retaining axle. Same as AMC20. I accepted 2 more Toy axles into my pile this afternoon. They are superior in many regards. Ah, so that's why the roller bearing works for the D44. I'm surprised you even understood what I was getting at. I uncovered my Toy pile so I could gloat every time I walk to the garage.
