I guess I will have to call my doctor an tell him he was wrong about the diagnosis.

I've noticed on occasion even when my PA helmet was new autodark wasn't fast enough, not all the time but could have been where I was welding at. When I did alot of starting and stopping is when I noticed it most. I don't doubt you at all and i'm replacing my helmet pretty soon and I'm not getting another PA helmet sale or not I'm getting a quality one just due to they are NOT 100% and I'm not chancing it any more where this will be my last set of eyes

tracey, carquest has some, that use the same internals as the miller pro hobby ones, but for a lot less $$, sold under hobart. the don't have the feel of the miller, and the head gear doesn't work as nice, but i think the lense is the same

" Just make sure you tell him "damnjeep" said so! ;D ;D I'm still curious about this as I've never heard about anyone getting a flash through one of those shields. Were you actually welding for a time with the shield not dark enough? Just a momentary "flash"? Have safety glasses on under the shield? Got me wondering about my own cheapy shield now..... Welding with a lens not dark enough will rip the eye balls outta ya! I had to do a lot of heavy flux core welding (not the same as the inner gas less flux core for smaller machines) at the shipyard and only had a #11 lens. I usually use a 12. After a full shift my eyes were super light sensitive the next day!

I have hundreds of hours welding with a PA mask, no problems at all. Tracy's uncle told me he prefers his PA mask over his expensive Jackson. I like the Jackson because it's almost clear when not tinted, it's one of the amber ones.

I just came in from doing a bunch of body work, and sheet metal welding. I had my PA shield on the lightest setting, and the welder on a low level, but my eyes are already feeling scratchy. guess I'll turn it up to 10-11 on the dial, because I have had some serious welder's flash before, and I hate it. not something I look forward to getting on a regular basis.

That would definitely fall under the "not dark enough lens"! I'm not doubting the story about getting a flash. Once you've had one its a feeling you won't forget! No mistaking it. More interested in the how. I've used hard wire, TIG, stick with mine and never had issues. Have changed the cover clear lens numerous times because of spatter etc and still works fine.

Just guessing... while the mask wasn't working... did you try to weld without a mask? Doesn't take long...
Either way... chalk another one up for never having a problem with the PA autodarkening mask. ended up wrapping the adjustment band up with tape to prevent the damn thing from ripping hairs out of my head. And the adjustment knob didn't make welding on my back much fun... but was definitely worth the money I paid for it.
We still talking about this? LOL

After a full shift my eyes were super light sensitive the next day! When I was doing a lot of welding on my jeep is when this happened. There wasnt one moment where the helmet didnt darken and I got hit with a bright light. It was more on the line of after welding a lot in an evening I would have to stop because my eyes were killing me. To the point where I couldnt sleep. Went to see the Doc to see if I could get some magic eye drops or something to help with the pain. He told me I was getting flash burn. Which is obviously what I expected was happening. This was going on over a week. I would weld for an evening and have to stop to give my eyes a rest for a few days. I talked to a welder friend of mine and told him what was happening. He told me he had seen cases of them helmets not reacting fast enough. Not one strike would give me the flash. It was over a course of an evening of welding. The helmet was reacting a micro second too slow evertime I would start a weld. Not something I would notice but it would keep putting strain on my eyes. Hes a pro so I took his word for it. So far with my miller I havent had a problem again.

I do recall 'a buddy' pissed at his brand hammer new Miller mask sucking and flashing him and not working right. He exchanged it for new, and the new one was the same. Then he put the settings in the right place and its been fine ever since. lol I resemble that remark lol

3-4 pairs of sunglasses just don't replace a good helmet
