Would this be like those ones on Craigslist/Kijiji/Ebay that are for sale for 10-20k and say 60+k invested?
For that much investment, why not just build a 100% custom rig with tube chassis and your choice of drivetrain? If you're looking for a junker JK you'll be looking at a rebuilt title anyway as any junker JK will be a write off.

Wow! From what it seems like ur gonna purchase a brand new jeep to use it for a shell? I would totally buy something older, spend less and make it ur own that way! Not trying to shatter dreams, I would totally like to see this build, but just doesn't seem sensible, unless u have won the lottery and don't plan to wheel for a while. Anyhow good luck, with whatever way u go

I say good luck on your build but why not use an older JEEP or buy an already built JEEP? Get an ebay rig with all the hard stuff already done and then put your own stink on it

I dig it. C'ept the axles are kinda way overkill pricewise. You can build some tons and put some goodies in 'em a lot cheaper and be just as robust.
The 4.0 stroker is cool, and I like the lean to OE Jeep motors....but an injected V8 would be way more fun.
No one asked yet, but what do you plan to do with this thing? Gonna come rockcrawling?

Ok ... so 1st off:
"Roadtripper" you are pretty friggin' good at estimating. Here's what it took me a month to put together: Chassis $16,129 Driveline $23,688 Rims & Tires $5,200 Bumpers & Winch $7,063 $52,079.65 +HST $59,891.60
If I can get it out of my garage and into the mud under $35k I think I can avoid the cost of a divorce lawyer. DOable?
Second off : Why a jk?
Had a CJ5 for 15 years and loved it. The thing went just about anywhere with twin ARBs. The Warn winch could pull it up a tree (alcohol was NOT a contributing factor). It was just too darn small to go anywhere far away. I'm not into RV's and I'm don't want to tow the thing.
Thirdly : Why tear a new Jeep apart?
My idea was to get a jk that was either in a serious accident or repossession. I'm sure not going to buy a new jk. The money isn't there for that!!
Lastly : What can/can't I do?
I suck at welding, can wrench with the best of 'em, run hoses and can re-wire a 747. I'm going to need help, but intend to do a bunch of this stuff myself. I figure it will take at least a year to 'git er done'.
Ok ... this is lastly ... Why? I've got limited interests : Rum + Coke and driving over stuff. The truck is cheaper than a new liver.

You can't import modified vehicles into Canada. I'd be interested in anything on this side of 49.

buy an 05 unlimited Rubicon, spend 5k on it and be done. take the rest of your 40k put it in a tin can and bury it under a tree.
you'll have the best fun of your life in that jeep and have saved 40k for a rainy day.
you're welcome.

Ok ... I'm listening. You're gonna convince me that spending $12k on this TJ stocker is a better bet than a semi-totaled jk? Why? That's a LOT of $$$$

You win! I'm grinnin' like a dog with a new tail ;D ;D Seriously now ... my Mrs needs more room to pack her stuff and we got 2 dogs. Your selling me on something that's a smidge bigger than my CJ and I still need to spend $15k (not $5k) for a stocker that I'm gonna break unless I drop another $15k in shiny stuff. I don't understand where you are going with this but I still like your post!

That's a LOT of $$$$ Have you looked into what you will need to do to get a written off JK legal for the road again? IIRC a rebuilt title requires inspection by a certified engineer - something that has been discussed a lot, but I'm not sure what the current status of the availability of an engineer is, if its still the guy in NB, you better build it stock, get it legal and then start you mods. Or is it for off-road only?
