Hard to say, but the PA one has a better low rpm and a more powerful motor. I have a benchtop mastercraft that's okay, the chuck holes are getting wallowed out. I'd like a lower speed.

PA all the way between them two.
PA is 3/4hp and 200rpm. HD is 1/2 hp and 300rpm. Its a wood machine.
You want to have lowest rpm possible.
Just from the pics, the PA looks to have heavier castings. Be very aware of the casting shapes when comparision shopping....King and a lot of other companies just 'brand' the same stuff PA gets and charge more. Same old story!

I was going to add you can compare King and Busy Bee for prices, they will all have similar models, just depends on the sale prices.

The PA one is basically the same as the King I have in the shop, it will do all you need to do.

see if the motor is a brand name - just because it says 3/4hp doesn't mean it is - made in china, taiwan, russia ??

Good luck finding a North American manufactured electric motor at PA, Busy Bee, or that place that sells King.
I get what you are saying about being held to a standard and inspected by, say, CSA or something, if it were made here you could trust the specs...... but its all Chinese.
Brand names not made in North America are just priced higher, they aren't any better.

Only time you would need the 3/4 hp would be running full speed with a buffing wheel. Belts will slip before you can stall the motor.

I'm not saying the PA wouldn't do the job or the King; just sayin that if you are looking at a drill press with parts and/or motor made "somewhere" as opposed to a Delta for instance with a motor made by Baldor then you aren't comparing apples to apples. Check out the Dewalt repair shop on Ilsley, they have smokin deals on dewalt, porter cable, and delta. If you are not in a rush keep an eye on the place, they bring in discontinued models and have refurbished items every week or so.

Baldor has manufacturing and design in China with ISO certs. Baldor products are available from 50 sales offices/warehouses in North America and 26 offices serving international markets. These products are produced at 26 plants in the US, Canada, England, Mexico and China. American ISO certs: www.baldor.com/about/iso_certification.aspChina - www.baldor.com.cn/Baldor Shanghai Factory gets ISO 9001:2008 Certification
Since year 2000, Baldor has been providing customer support in China and the Asia Pacific region for CSTs, Motors , Drives and other Baldor products. In 2008, Baldor built a brand new 30,000sq-m manufacturing facility in Shanghai. The Certification Body of TUV Rheinland, Germany has certified that Baldor Electric (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., has implemented a Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9001:2008. The scope of this Quality Management System includes Design and manufacture of CST and 3-phase asynchronous motors.what is a CST motor? I see in the first link that 3 or 4 American plants produce electric motors. ISO should guarantee the specs are good on the motors produced in China, assuring apple to apple comparisions.

not sure on the ISO specs for motors but for gearboxes the ISO standard is 15-20% less than AGMA - when selecting a gearbox for an application you have to keep in mind where they are manufactured and to which standard
