Getting some time in on the Jeepster, put TJ seat belts in the front, need to modify the roll bar a bit to add the rear ones. Took all the old engine wiring harness out, made it a bit cleaner under the hood, added a tach, volt guage, and all the dash lights work. Today swapped out the spool in the rear for the Aussie locker that I already had. Picked up a lock right for the front, I'll order Longfields in the next month and put the lock right in then. My speedometer was jumping, that just took a little crimp on the transfer case end to tighten it up I hope. I already put a new cable in last year. CB wasn't working, found that problem and fixed it. Odered new brake shoes today, so can't test drive yet. Mud eats them up quick. Aussie Empty rear end

More playing in the garage. I have new shoes on back, an emergency brake again, and found a survival kit for the 4.3, a used MSD box. Hooked it up and it seems to work. It's got a 6000 rev limiter in it now, I think I have to find a smaller one. Working on the soft top frame tonight, then it goes to the neighbors upholstery shop for a new top.

More changes, the old Chevy transfer case has some vibes and gives me the willies at highway speeds. I could fix it, or I could replace it with something better, the Dana 300. I'm not sure this is all going to happen before Jam, but I'm hoping. It involves crossmember changes, driveshaft changes, and a new hole in the floor. Depending where the shifter lands I may end up going twin stick, it might be easier than using the stock shifter. I found an installed but never used AA SM465 to Dana 300 on Pirate, the guy put it in then went to a doubler and didn't need it. I made a trip to the valley and picked up a couple of Dana 300's, guy had them left over from his Jeeping days. I pulled it apart to check the bearings, it looks pretty good. In order to take out the intermediate shaft I put a deep socket inside so the roller bearings wouldn't fall out, easier to reinstall. Now waiting to pick up the new seals this week.

Nice choice. if the damn adapters weren't $500, I'd love to run one on my rig. Front dig goodness....

It was a hard decision to make 3 weeks before Jam, but I considered the time I had left and figured it would work out. The last time this pig drools on my garage floor: On it's way out: Quite a difference in size to the Dana 300, probably 75-100 lbs difference. I was worried the Dana 300 would hang lower, but not much difference. My new adapter has an extra clocking position on it, so it may end up higher. The rear output on the D300 is much higher, so I can see I'll have to change the leaf mounts on the axle to get the driveshaft aligned again. The rear output is longer too, and my new adapter is longer, so the rear driveshaft will have to be shortened about 7", the front lengthened about 3". SM465 output:

What transfer case was in it to begin with?

Rockwell T221, came behind an SM420 in the 60's, predecessor to the NP205 in later trucks.

As they say, no guts no glory. When I bought the adapter I knew it had 2 clocking positions on it, and thought I'd be happy with the one up from stock. That one left the transfer case below my crossmember which was already lower than I'd like. I don't have time to order a clocking ring, so I redrilled a third position on the adapter. Quite easy really, make a pattern and drill new holes, being careful to keep centered so the adapter still fits over the bearing retainer on the transfer case. The problem is the support casting on the adapter wouldn't allow a full movement to a third position, so I had to drill the holes a little closer than the two that were there. Not really a problem, I'll fill the adjacent holes with a rod of some type, I don't think it really requires welding the holes shut, but I'll ask a local machinist anyway. The one bolt closest to the support I'll use a button head bolt and grind a nut to use as a spacer to keep it off the tapered seat. It all makes sense to me. ;D

A boss I used to have was a mechanical engineer, he said drilling two holes side by side didn't affect strength, but he was talking about holes in a truck frame. I was worried it was possible to twist the adapter if the holes were close. I'll have them filled up with a stud tonight.
These adapters live behind big block chevys, so no real worry anyway.

Taking away material will always make something weaker, but in this case, no big deal. The strength comes from the bolt head pulling the adapter and t-case together, and no so much any side force on the bolt. The friction when its torqued down is probably stronger than the shear strength of the bolts. Looks sweet Paul

Transfer case is in! Camera wouldn't unload, had to dig out the old one. Driveshafts should be getting done tomorrow, along with crossmember changes and more playing with the shifters.
