6mm vb should be lots. dad went out to buy a new roll a couple of weeks ago, and asked for the "Thick" stuff, and what he got was 3mm. he did manage to get 6mm though, on the second trip.

When I built my house you could get regular 6 mil, and one called super 6. The super 6 was the thick stuff and the only one that would pass inspection then. The price difference was over double.

since I have all this free vb would it make sense to vb over the top of the existing vb to add a little bit more thickness? or is that just a waste of time?
also some of the insulation got a little wet the other night, that shouldn't affect anything?

Two layers may trap moisture between them, I wouldn't do it. Hang the insulation up by driving a nail through it into a stud, it will likely drip out, but probably not in this weather unless you do it in the basement.

How did the insulation get wet? do your walls leak? condensation? was it outside?

We had to move it outside when we strapped the ceiling, there is just too much stuff in there to work around. Good point on the vb trapping moisture. Ill use the nice thick stuff on the ceiling.

what is the easiest way to cut insulation? i didn't have to cut much at the beginning of this project but now i have to cut A LOT of it. I can tell you box cutters suck the big one, scissors didn't work too well either. anything else out there? I was thinking of using a 2x4 to flatten it where i want to cut it, but i didn't know if that was bad for the fluffy'ness of the insulation. Hillary will be happy to see 6 pieces of insulation hanging up to dry in our basement. they all froze together you can take the "heat" for that one Paul Ceiling is mostly insulated, doubled up on the R12 and calculations say I will have enough. I just have to stuff the gaps where it isn't quite wide enough.

Your 2x4 will work. It's all compressed in the bags, you doing it again won't hurt.

x2 but I use the blade longer with the 2x4. same - blade all the way out, fresh new blade... the stuff is fluffy and should cut easily. I typically put the piece of insulation down in place and over top of the 2x4 (which is your rafter or stud) and use that as the hard surface to cut along. This gives you about an inch of extra which you can easily stuff in along side to keep everything in place.

i should admit the box cutter i was using was one of the mini ones from dollarama. I'll pick up one of those big guys and give it another go tonight. Hopefully all the cutting goes quick, I am anxious to get this done!!
