Picked up a Unit heater (like Jans) 220v FLC 55 Amp.
What Do I need for breakers (double pole 60?) What guage wire (Assume 48 foot run) I getting 6 guage as an answer.
And what is available as a switch?

Not sure if a 60 will hold it. Inital start up could run into the 80a mark and be held for longer than the 60 would carry it.
#8 = 40a #6 = 60a #4 = 80a
As for controlling it, I would sugest a line voltage thermostat controlling a contactor.
I dont think you will find a thermostat rated for that draw.
The unit maybe wired with a contactor so perhaps it can be wired through that. Does it have a stat on the unit?
@ 55 w Im not sure if thay still have the small stat on the side.

Some of those have 120V controllers, which means you should be able to use a line voltage electric heat thermostat. Electric heat doesn't have the high inrush current of a motor so you should be fine. What brand panel are you feeding it from?

I was thinking more about the provision to add an external thermostat......said hippie can keep it... I'll score a new one.

I'll have a look tonite at it....... Eaton Cutler-Hammer So I need Cutler Hammer 60A double pole breaker? Yes, 60A DP. The reason I asked is because Cutler Hammer are the Power Fist of panels. They've become very popular in recent years, likely due to lower price. I've heard a few breakers melting at high loads. I wouldn't let that stop you, just something to keep your eye on. I have 3 CH panels in my apts. There are 2 types of breakers, bolt in and push in, most residential used push in. If you need help with the thermostat post up a pic of what you have.

#6 and a dp60 will work fine..... as long as you don't go over 75 feet of wire. in that case you have to de-rate the wire. as for contrailing it you will need a t-stat contraoling a contactor if the unit dosn't have its own stat.
