So i bought some synth rope today. Being me i wanted to do all that i could myself. Did alot of research on how to put the ends on that i would need. found out how to do a brummel splice, wasnt that bad. made my own protective shield and put the other end on, then started to respool. All respooled, now to unspool it all tomorrow and respool under weight. It is SuperMaxII rope, has the sameDyneema SK-75 fibre as amsteel. I went with the 5/16 as it has a breaking strength of 13750lb and only weighs 2.46lbs per 100 feet. Now to get a Hawse fairlead.

you should have a shield on the spool end under heavy load it will melt to the spool!

Most of what i read stated that a properly workin winch will only heat if spooling out and not free spooling. I f spooling out to do it in 10 foot bursts. That being said they stated that if worried about the heat from a hard pull that you would have most of your line out for max pull power so not that big of a deal to slide the protector down. But i have no expierence with this stuff so any other info be appreciated. may just put another shield on if need be.

When you respool it with a load on it,DON"T try to spool it on the drum nice and neat. With rope the messier the better. If you have it neat when you do a hard pull it'll suck it down between the layers and then be all bound up the next time you try to unspool it.A real PITA!!!

I bought mine at Hercules in Dartmouth. I bought the rope and metal loop end and they spliced it for me at no extra charge. I do not hook the end to my stinger or bumper. I spool it up until the hook end is snug in the fairlead. Tow reasons, one is that there is the least amount of rope exposed to the sun (I have to get and winch cover) and this way I do not have to unhook it. This is real helpful when you are stuck in a water hole. All you have to do is take the pressure off the rope but spooling out an inch or two you can use a stick to hook on the end and then unspool it.

You are going to want to get rid of that fairlead and go with a Hawse one. One sideways pull and your rope will bind up in the wheels and probably break!

I've got a fairlead I was planning on selling. It's identical to this one. Never used or even installed.

wouldn't the issue of heat be from a heavy pull, and the electric motor getting hot and thermal transfer to the drum? And then the rope closest to the drum melts?
I thought you had to heat-wrap the first few turns around the winch.
you can't slide back a protector unless the entire rope is unspooled, its gotta be installed before spooling up.

From most I've read the heag comes from spooling out because you are working against the brake. But I don't claim to bd an expert. Only going by what I read. That being said I have to unspool it to change my fairlead so I will put a second one close to the drum. Better to be safe.
