They are SWEET!
Brings back the memories of Pap's old Bruce Stewert motor.
Up the French Shore they called them Pick A Packs, or Putt Putts because thats how they sounded going out to sea in the early mornings.

Very cool. When I was a kid there was a guy in Deep Cove who had one on a small boat that he'd go up and down the cove. Very distinct sounding engines Cool to see running, even cooler to see being used!

does the title "make n' break" imply anything about their reliability?

I would expect it has more to do with their ignition setup

I think its in relation to their firing mechanism. It is all mechanical, and fairly simple, no wear items, and easy to fix with no parts.
They offer superb reliability due to their simplicity. They can run on most any petroleum distillate. They start on gas, but can run after on gas/kerosene/deisel/oil. They cool with seawater and check valves.
These were all that powered small fishing boats for generations, the fisherman's lives depended on these machines everyday.
Behind the weighted flywheel is the water pump on a connecting rod, and the check valves. Spend a couple of minutes looking at it and you'll figure it out.
Carb, water pump, cylinder housing, head is on the side, valve springs are exposed. exaust is just a pipe right off the head.
...trying to upload a vid of the big one, just got it going but the thundershowers were coming in, so Erwin got to covering them up again. He was prepping for a show in Amerst.

Cool stuff. A few years ago at Gala Days in Berwick a guy had a couple of them running a demo.
