I thought hard about this for more than a year & I see your point about the VR12000 but it is not the M12000; it's a much cheaper offering using cheaper components. Not knocking it, but there is an additional $300 to spend for synthetic line + the wireless controller. I'm not stating the TW12 is as stout as the M12000, but his winches are popular with Jeep & other clubs in ON and also popular in the US.

I've been down the cheap winch road too and wouldn't buy anything that doesn't have a proven track record and local support from the shop where I purchased it.
I'm thinking any cost savings would go out the window the first time something goes wrong and it has to be shipped back to Ontario: "We are not obligated to bear the cost of labour or transportation charges in the replacement of defective parts."

I heard this years ago and it was attributed to Ben Franklin: "The best is always cheapest". Today, we seem to be caught up in saving money up front and never consider what that costs us in the long run. Sorry, old guy rambling.

i have this winch and know of another that does as well, both are on 4dr jks and have been used a fair amount. It may not be a big name here, but they all have to start somewhere. only issue i did have was mine was one of the first with wireless around here. the push button toggle switch on the winch proved to be a poor design. with one call the whole new assembly was sent no questions asked with the improved toggle switch. customer service goes a long way with me, anything can break.

I don't know the winch but I do know the supplier and duncan would stand behind anything he sells; that being said there are lots of local suppliers right here for other brands that also stand behind them

Thanks guys but I ran the buy through another forum and it ends today (Dec 19th). Didn't post it here because of the feedback/opinions given above. It became another "WARN or nothing thread", until now.
Regardless, I am more than willing to have a heads up performance comparison once I get it installed in the next 2 weeks.

It became another "WARN or nothing thread", until now. Uh, dude.... 1 guy said he prefers Warn, after trying other cheap winches. 1 guy doesn't want to ship a broken winch to Ontario, when local guys sell the same basic thing and will service them here. 2 guys give a good review of service, one who broke it, and one who knows the distributor. Regardless, I am more than willing to have a heads up performance comparison once I get it installed in the next 2 weeks. My guess is you rate it very high.

Thanks, but that is the direction it was taking IMO. What else do you take away from cheap? Anyway, the heads up will be against a Warn 12,000 and tests will be timed. I'll let the numbers talk

Take them both on a Tia's trail run right after or during a rainstorm.

I'll let the numbers talk I don't think the concerns expressed were about the speed of the winch, more the longevity and durability of the winch over time. Previously "cheap" winch owners have had failures in the first months of owning them and then had good reliability out of other name brand winches that replaced the original unit. People are leery of a good deal that hasn't stood up to the test of time.

I understood that and anything can fail, I've seen it happen to any winch regardless of price tag. He's been in the market for 7 years and I've seen nothing bad. You are correct in that time will tell.

The true test will be when someone local does buy one (and it will happen), nothing beats first hand experience. Can't wait to hear the results of your speed and durability tests.
