I hope your not just butt welding them peaces in the frame Thats not the best way to do it I have did this to ford trucks The way to do it , is a z cut not just a straight cut A z cut is way stronger because there is more frame to weld Just some fast photos from google

Z's are to reduce focal points for stress risers. Bending loads won't be all on the HAZ, as with a straight cut. I beleive this is common on heavy equipment? In the context of a Jeep, there isn't as much load carrying capablity needed. Straight cuts with oval or fishmouth plates are perfectly acceptable. Easier too.

also, the jeep frame is a box section, it doesn't twist, like a truck frame. the twisting, and flexing of a C channel frame is why they are more likely to crack.
personally, i trust alan's experiance :-)

Finally got the shop empty and some time to get back at it today! Frame tacked together. Welded I now have a frame 24" longer. Still have to make fish plates and weld them on. Got the motor mounts cut off too. Got to start building some axles to go under it now.

Makes the wheelbase just about the same as a 4 door Wrangler.
