Sailors Used to do this with ivory ...... hoops linked together...... balls inside boxes...... all kinds of stuff to pass the time.

Around here, the old test peices I've seen have been tiny scale, working, steam engines. Mosly of brass. (easy cutting)

Very interesting. I've made wood carvings similar, though not as complex.
Looks like they were a series of counter bores, then the corners are cut clear with a die grinder, or slitting saw, and buffed to hide the change in surface
