My poor old 98 Chevy has started needing more and more work every time I drive it. I try to get out, the handle busts off in my hand. The door is falling off, won't close properly. I put wheelbearings in the front, they get eaten up in 2 months, (bad spindle), it has zero creature comforts, no cruise, sacked out cloth bench seat. The frame in the back is getting seedy. Found a cracked spring hanger the other day. 325000kms. 4.3 works great, and a real tight rebuilt trans.
My Dad gave it to me, maybe 6 years ago? I did a bunch of work to it, and it served me really well. Allowed me to get ahead without a truck payment all those years. Thx Mic!
But the last few weeks have been a struggle with the poor old girl, and looking ahead to a busy season of camper towing, getting married and all the camping/visiting its going to entail, a new buggy to drag to the valley every couple of weeks......I needed a new truck. But I ain't making no damn payments on a new truck that costs $5000 to drive off the lot. Pure loss.
So I was looking for a Cummins for a couple of weeks. Passed on a couple, one I wanted got sold while I was at a concert. Saw the dealer there...'Hey man, I'm gonna come in and check out that Ram tommorrow" He said it sold 2 hours before . Bummer.
So I found the same thing, as far away as Scott would drive me. ;D Way way up Northern NB.
We stopped in Truro to fix his exaust, fawk it was loud! Like a couple of broke 20 year olds, we were laying in the CT parking lot with a $5 wrench set and a Leatherman, trying to quiet it down. Fixed it for $20. Just needs some tack welds!
I actually tried to use my Chevy to rent a towdolly, was going to drive it up there, and dolly it back home behind the Dodge. UHaul denied me the rental based on the condition of the truck. Fawkin hitch installers were pickin scabs off the frame and even found the cracked hanger I pretended I didn't know about. Good job guys. lol I can't hold it against them. It was a sign.
So Scott drove me. I can't thank you enough man!!! It was a hard go on the way home. Hard on the eyes following each other, at night in the mist, headlights in the mirrors. We were taking turns being the moose catcher, so we had to run kinda close together.
So here is my new truck! Its an '04 2500 Ram with the Cummins and a rebuilt auto, billet converter and stuff. 285000kms, AAM front axle. rear discs. Laramie, so its very well optioned, leather, and all that.
It has a lot of chrome things stuck to it everywhere.
Undercarriage is 10 years old obviously, but in good condition. She def. needs a few days of clean up and touch-ups and undercoat, but its plenty solid and no rust aside from surface scale that will clean up. Floors and doors and fenders and stuff are excellent. Bottom of tailgate needs a bit of touchup, some bubbles along lower edge.
Yup, thats my new truck. Love that rumbling Cummins. Its a 24V 5.9. All stock. Im not going to mess with it this year.
Compared to the little Chev and 4.3, i feel like I'm driving an 18 wheeler, the torque is just outrageous.
Digital display driving down from NB averaged 19.9mpg. I did not hand calc. yet, she need a fill tonight before work. Ripping around town yesterday averaged 17ish mpg. Just oon the display thing thats probably programmed to run high, so the owner feels warm and fuzzy.
Another x10 thanks to Scott Eldridge for driving me up there. We were on the road for like 14 hours.
Coming soon to an event near you!
