Tools for the trail

I'm just new to Jeeps and off roading.
Went out on the Jeep 101 yesterday and there was a "trail repair" that needed to be accomplished.
I drive a JK and would like to know what tools I should carry on board in order to fix/repair/jury rig while on the trail.
Thanks in advance for any help/info you can give to the newb.

A good start would be a decent socket set (including 12pt 13mm and 36mm axle nut sockets, or whatever sizes required to remove your front hub/bearing), and wrenches, and a hammer.

Breaker bar, penetraing oil, apparently a "60 highlift is better to have than a 48" lol need to find my receipt and exchange. Ratcheting straps, duct tape, theses are the things I've picked up on.

Tire plugs and something to air up tires
Is good too

what about a can of tire repair kinda thing. You know the ones that inject a sealant into the tire?

Not a tool but bug repellant would be a good thing to have

A piece of pipe about 3' long, good for smart ass's and leverage ;D
An ax, prybar ( I carry a 4' ice breaker ;D used many times many ways ).
A set of cumalongs, small and large.
Steel wire, black tape, hose clamps, vice grips, as stated a tire plug kit, cheap but get the one with good handels. Note,,, for trail repair of large holes i have seen numerous plugs used and lit on fire to burn into tire to get out to the road.

Flash light, tow rope and recovery strap, not the same things

Muffler clamps,odd nuts and bolts.

And if all that fails, best thiing to have,,,, is Len and Scotty's number ;D

I keep a Folgers coffee bucket in the WK that has a couple of ratchet straps, various size zip ties, a small pipe cutter, tapes (duct, electrical, & teflon), utility knife, and a lighter. Also, first aid kit, an axe, strap wrench, hammer, vise grips, large crescent, large slip joint pliers, recovery straps, jumper cables, 48" jack, compass, OBA, a few trail (granola) bars, and various pieces of non PTW lumber (2"x 6"x 42", 2"x 10"x 12", and 4"x 4"x 42").

Might be worth trying to accumulate the stuff listed for a sticky, all organized? MUCH discussion needed, as some guys support throwing the entire shop in the hatch, while others "make do"with a bare-bones kit. Something in the middle....

Haven't seen it yet. Small propane/butane soldering iron. Good for soldering (obviously) but remove the tip and you can fuse/shape plastic to an extent. Also, FOOD. If you get stuck/broke, it can be a LOOONG day/night.

Sorry Joe, this should have been something I sould have mentioned on Sunday. Here is a list of items that you should bring on the trail.

-* A full set of sockets, including the odd ones for changing an axle.
-*some ratchets straps.
-*various fluids like brake and power steering
-*duck tape
- brake pads
-ball joints
-tie rods
-struts
-muffler, including clamps
-* spare tire
-*plug kit ( and know how to use it)
-2 spare tires if you have them
-hand winch ( and this past Sunday was the first time I had to use it on someone elses jeep )
-* heavy blanket to lay on if the ground is cold or wet
-rear axles
-front axles
-*food
-*water
-*spare keys
-* a copy of your local rescue list for where you are wheeling
-*toilet paper
-*bug spray
-*after bite for when you forgot to put on the bug spray
-Rear window
-front window
-side windows
-fender clips, god knows i have used my fair share of them. ;D
-*good quality flashlight, no less than C battery size
-*first aid kit
-*cell phone, and be willing to walk to a spot that it will work
-* GPS if you are exploring a new to you trail system.
-*blankets if you are night wheeling, always plan on staying the night
-* second jeep ( jeeping buddy )

So after all that, your packed up and out on the trail having a blast, Feeling good that you packed up all your gear, did the check list and are now running the trails...............................until.......................you hear a snap.................it is something and it just does not sound good............and I will put money on it that with everything that you packed up from the above list, your not going to have what you need.

The moral to my story is, no matter how much stuff you put in your JEEP you will always be missing that part you need that is sitting home in your garage.

The above is only as a joke but some do have an asterisk. The ones with the asterisk are the items that I travel with when on the trail for the day.

And always when wheeling, tell people where you are going and give a return time and try to stick to it. Alot of areas in our woods have no cell phone service, if you are in serious trouble, at least someone will be able to give a rescuer a starting point.

Guaranteed that the one item you will need will not be with you.
"Shaun in a can" may be just the ticket, but I'm not sure how he'll feel if we can him up and leave him in the back of the Jeep :-)
