So I'm considering fabricating my own rear bumper w tire carrier for my JK. thinking of using 3/16 aluminium for the bumper itself. Will most likely build bumper first the add tire carrier later, I've only recently started to weld and have no experience with welding aluminium at all. any tips would be appreciated. I am using a 110 mig welder.
Thanks in advance for any useful tips!
Donnie

Have you seen the black widow do it yourself kits? I haven't, I thought they were already built and just needed finishing, but I priced up the metal for just a rear bumper and its between $130- $164 depending on whether I go steel or aluminium.

Welding aluminum is wayyyy harder lol. Be a stupit weld with 110. 240 mig with a spool gun and 100% argon.

Yeah, did some more research and apparently Al likes to soak up/absorb the heat more than steel making it harder to get a puddle(if I'm using that right). Some say you can preheat it but seems like more trouble than it's worth.

Alum is very difficult to weld. Only something for experienced folk. Plus you Need a spool gun or tig to Weld it.
3/16" would be a minimum for steel. 1/4" at least for alum, it isn't nearly as strong.

These are the bumper mounts I made for my sons KJ. I ran 3 beads of weld to attach the flange. This is a loose fitting on his jeep. The mounts aren't' actually crooked. They are just sitting loose. A cardboard mock up of what his bumper will look like

X2 on it being Smaller. You're not really gonna protect the fender & flares much with a bumper. It will end up gettin in the way and pissing you off more than anything.
