Recycling my post, was originally about a Jeep at CVO but the owner hasn't called me back so meh.
Anyways, I was wondering if someone could give me the lowdown on the 4banger TJ's I see around. Basically I'm looking for a DD, might do some highway driving and the like (possibly now and again to Cape Breton) with light offoading. I know most of them at standard and geared differently.
I do prefer the Inline 6 because of the power, but I've heard that the 4cyl can be brought up a bit with a throttle body from the 4.0L and a few other bits and bobs.
If I bought one, what would I be in for?

Which one? There are at least 2. One is my sons, not foresale, the other is a 4.0 with automatic. Call Cvo.

Might try to call if I can. Someone was telling me that he saw a 4 cylinder up there for sale in near mint condition for $4000.

The 4 cyl is great off road , and bombing around town . You will hate it on the hiway !! and it barely gets better fuel milage then the 6 cyl

I just bought a 4 cyl TJ and I would agree 100% with what The Garagemahal says above. I use it as my run around / beater / trail rig and I love it. However, trips on the hwy make me hate it ha ha ha!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned... there are 2 very different 4 cylinders that were available in the TJ. The vast majority have the 2.5L Jeep engine which is basically just a 4.0 minus 2 cylinders. Later years ('05- up maybe? somebody please confirm) used the chrysler 2.4 DOHC. I've owned a few 2.5 powered jeeps and as 4 cylinder's go it's a great little motor with good low end grunt for getting around on the trail and around town. The 2.4 is what it is, a twin-cam car engine, you've got to rev it to get any power out of it.

I read that there are a few cost effective mods that can be done that picks them up a bit, like the 4.0L throttle body. Any truth to this? Debating picking up a little 4 banger, there's some decent ones out there that are much more cheaper than the 4.0L and more readily available.

The 4 cylinder isn't bad if you keep to stock tires (215s/225s), add a bigger and heavier tire and you can forget about 5th gear except on downhills and flat ground.

Yes the throttle body works as well as a free flowing air filter

Hi, I'm helping my friend with his jeep. We took a 6 cylinder from a 2001 tj and swapped it in a 1997 tj Swap is going well but the body harness plug to the engine harness plugs are not compatible. Does anyone have any info on how to fix this?
