My son recently bought a 2002 Jeep Tj with a 4l engine. It had a bad growl in the tranny so we took it out to find the main bearing was shot.It was a sealed bearing and when I purchased the new bearing it was sealed on both sides as well.Should it be? How would the oil get to the bearing if its sealed.My father said we should remove the seals to let the gear oil from the tranny in to lube the bearing, but Im not sure. There is a oil cavity in the bearing retainer to allow any extra oil out.Most of the pitchures online of new trannys have sealed bearings but the older ones are not sealed. A penny for your thoughts.

well new bearing is in ,seals are out and so far so good. Father is always right we hope. Time will tell.

I was under the impression the case had to be split in order to change that bearing? To my understanding (someone correct me if im wrong) sealed bearings use a heavier grease to keep them lubricated, so the grease is sealed in. When you get to journal bearings like you would find in engines, transmissions, turbos. They rely on a thin oil film from an outside source to operate correctely. So, in removing the seals from the bearing as you have mentioned; I would think that this would wash out/thin out the grease that would be in it, causing premature failure of the bearing.

the grease will wash away but the oil will keep it lubricated - in the end oil is better anyway
