Stopped in at Engine Land Inc (ELI) in Montreal a little over a week ago and wanted to pass on some info. www.enginelandinc.com/enproducts.asp
JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market. These are all of the vehicles and engines that are specific to Japan and that we don't get here in North America. For example, we may only get one engine here for a Civic, but in Japan, they have 5 different engines to choose from. There are two other JDM importers in Montreal: osakajdmmotors.com/en/ & tokyomotorimports.com/ and if you search, there are more in Canada, especially in B.C. They deal mostly with gasoline engines, but Engine Land had about 8 diesels in stock.
Guy at ELI said that in the early 2000's, Tokyo passed a law that cars over a certain age were not allowed in the city of Tokyo for emissions reasons. Right now, cars can be no older than 2007 in the city of Tokyo. When they first passed the law, a LOT of cars were scrapped, which flooded the market with good used parts, and the prices globally dropped. They ship the cars and car parts to many places in the world.
In Japan, they do not have local mechanics and aftermarket parts. Cars must be taken to the dealer annually for an inspection, and any bad parts are replaced with factory OEM parts. These cars are maintained in basically factory new condition. However, once the cars get too old, and too many parts have to be replaced, they just buy a new car, and the old car is exported or scrapped. But, the drivetrain will be in excellent condition. This is where the JDM importers come in.
Most of the diesels that ELI import, they export again to other countries that already have these engines in the country, so spare parts are easy to come by. Spare parts can be found on ebay around the world, and I did find some Isuzu engine parts on the U.S. ebay. But, if you are going to keep your vehicle and the diesel for a long time, it might be best to buy a second engine for spare parts. However, considering how well the vehicles are maintained, it should not be a problem.
Found some Diesel engine repair manuals on ebay out of Australia: www.ebay.ca/sch/greenmanual/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=
Here are some of the diesels I found there. There would be 15% tax on the prices, and a few hundred $$ for shipping if you want it shipped to Halifax. All engines include transmissions, and most are 4wd with the T/C.
96-97 Toyota 2L Non-turbo mechanical pump for $2200, includes 2wd trans.
96-97 Toyota 2L Turbo Electronic pump with computer, 2.5 litre, for $3000, includes trans.
92-95 Mitsubishi 4M40 turbo Mechanical pump, 5 spd trans with T/C for $3500
Mazda turbo Electronic pump with trans and T/C for $2500
90-91 Toyota Land Cruiser H diesel (6 cyl) Non-turbo manual trans with T/C for $4000
Toyota Land Cruiser 2H diesel (6 cyl) Turbo auto trans with T/C for $6000
95-97 Isuzu 4JG2 3.1 litre Turbo with Auto Trans and T/C for $3000
They can get the Toyota Land Cruiser KZ turbo diesel 4 cyl 3.0 litre which is a very good engine, but I did not get a price on it. I think they are about $3000 as well.
If you have a specific engine model in mind, they can probably get it. A 1.8 litre Honda Civic engine is about $800.
