Here's a few pics of Tracy's next upgrade. Going in sometime before the Jam. 300 was flipped to have driver's side front output, front view. New aluminum shift rail. This used to be the bottom of the case. Rear view. Going to be using cable shifters, more room having the shift rods come out the back. As Tracy called it, the chicken plate. Bolted on, 231 box bolts to this. 231 Box. Just the front half of a 231 t-case, front output cut off and filler plate welded in. Main shaft is shortened and splined to fit into the 300. The 2 bolted together. That's about how it will sit in the Jeep. Stock TJ shifter will shift the 231 box. Length is about the same as a stock 231. This piece was cut off the front output bearing support. The metal cylinders hold the detent springs and balls. Still a few things to finish up (231 is just on there for pics). Low in 231 is 2.72, 300 is 2.62, both in low gives 7.13.

That chicken plate would be perfect type of thing to burn on my table, if you were interested.

What would a set up like this cost a fella if he already had the 231 and a 300? Just ballpark. I thought of a doubler at least 1000 times before, just can't wrap my head around all the machine work.....

Alan, did you heat treat the shaft I got you to make for me before sending it up? I can't remember. lol.. so far so good, I took everything appart earlier last year and no signs of wear.. I'm going to be tearing it appart again when I put everything on the new frame for another inspection, but I'm not too worried.. I beat on it pretty hard last year and it seems to hold up.
You can heat treat at home, but it's not as controlled. you need to have an even heat, wheras heating with the torch isn't a constant even heat, but you can get it close enough that I don't think you'll have much issue. the mid shaft is not getting all the strain, besides you have about 3 or 4" of spline engagement, that doesnt' really move(if you use little spacers or cut it the correct length.. that's alot of spline. the output of the 300 or whatever you use at the back end is.

Rico spun all the unharden'd splines off a spud shaft a few years ago, iirc I would hate to ruin the machine work because i went cheap on hardening.
I also had Alan make me a shaft, and then got it hardened for under $100. It hasn't found its way into anything yet, but I considered the hardening to be essential at the time.
