I'm looking for scrap metal places in HRM (or within driving distance/south shore, whatever). Do any of the fab shops around sell their cut-offs? I'm looking to practice my MIG welding and would like to get cheap/free scraps to do so (no point in spending money on good steel to just mess it all up). Thanks Tim metalsrus has scrap bin out front of the garage door. kelly will let you grab some of it if you ask her. its shorts from the bandsaw mostly, clean, good for practising on.

Thanks for the reply.
Are there any scrap metal yards that sell lengths (not neccessarily standard lengths) or scrap 'recycled' lengths??
What about 'dumps' that also sell metal that gets picked up, etc?
Does all the scrap in NS just get recycled/melted down or does somebody sell it?
Thanks
Tim

you obviously didn't read the thread. The only mention of a place that sells scrap steel is the place near Digby? Is this the only place in NS that sells scrap steel? I read about Metals R Us and Russel and a couple of other places that sell 'to order' lengths of 'new full price' steel. I'm looking to find somebody that sells scrap to build some budget projects (no I'm not going to use scrap steel for a cage or anything else like that, just benchs and carts and things). Thanks, was excited about a local forum dealing with metal fab. Not so excited to see responses such as above. Tim

And compared to most other message boards, we're pretty nice. Jan was just overloaded with cat pictures! ;D There was another thread somewhere lately that mentioned a scrap yard in Halifax. Most scrap yards will sell metal before it gets sent for recycling.

I guess compared to somewhere like Metals-r-us, Russel Metals would seem to have a good price. I phoned them last fall for prices for job I was estimating. It was for a lot of material, plus a sheet of 1/8 stainless for another job. I asked if there was any discount for the volume, and was told only long standing account customers get a discount, and it was only small anyway. The aircraft shop I do work for ordered the stainless for me on their account, and it was over $100 cheaper. I still might be doing the other work, and Russels won't be getting the order.

I got Russell to quote a bunch of stainless a few months ago. The lot came to $5000. I ended up purchasing it through CFF Stainless for $3600.
Russell is not a stainless supplier, they do not stock it.

sorry i thought there was mention of dartmouth metals in the thread, they are at the bottom of burnside. they recieve scrap metal for $$, and they have scrap you can look thru. i never got anything from there, but i've unloaded scrap axles, etc. i think there is another place that has construction debris, and you can get steel there.

Thanks for all the comments guys! No worries, I was really offended as much as confused as I was pretty sure I didn't miss any comments about scrap places. I'll defenitely look into Darthmouth Metals, sounds like the place to go for the junk I'm looking for I look forward to learning and checking out some fabrication projects on here. I'm not into 4X4 stuff, more general welding projects and potentially some handling performance modifications. Thanks

You could probably check out Maritime demolition for some scrap metal as well. They are also in burnside.
