I have good luck at Metals R Us.
they are located just up over the hill from Princess, next to Rod's Machine Shop.
hey George, if you are reading, can you put up the address for Russell Metals. I have not tried them yet. but you like 'em for your work.

With Russell you need a minimum purchase of $200.
They are in Lakeside, past Bayers Lake Tim's then the next set of lights turn right, at the top pf the hill on left.
THINK It's Lakeside drive or something, funny work on that street for over 7 years and still don't know what street it is lol.

Mariner Forge in Woodside is a good place to get steel. If the don't have it they'll usually recommend metals r us. They also cut, bend and weld. Its just up the hill from the police station.

Mariner Forge actually sells steel?
I thought they were fab only. (they are in at my work a few times a week, nice guys, easy to talk to)
they're in Woodside industrial park.
liltoy - are you sure about the min. order for Russell? and I thought they had a location on Kempt rd for some reason?

There definitely is a $200 min at Russel. They're a huge warehouse, you gotta wear a hardhat when you go in, or they'll make you stay in your truck. (Maybe depends on who's there, but they are pretty serious) And you do have to buy full lengths/sheets. They will cut it for you (for a fee), but you have to buy it all.

at russell the $200 thing is yes and no.if you are a company that deals with them the 200 min does not apply. they dont deal with the average joe off the street wanting a 1 ft piece. as elizebeth just told me. metals are us and metal supermarket, rods machine shop better for the do it yourselfer .hope that clears the russel confusion.

Hmmm... what shop would I go to for machine/fab work? Oh yeah, I have my own! ;D Best place to get new or used steel down this way is Fundy Auto Salvage (big scrap yard), just past Digby. I get better prices than getting it direct from Russell, and faster too. Steel prices are changing so much these days, you never know how much it's going to cost.

Steel prices are changing so much these days, you never know how much it's going to cost. Man, ain't that the truth. Even with the 'little guy' shops like Metals R Us, the price per foot on something simple like 1" SH-40 went up $0.50 a foot in only 2 months. The GM there, kelly, told me that it all depends on if it was cold or hot forged and it depends before that on where Russel get's theirs from as there is 3 suppliers they get to choose from .. or something like that.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but thought this could be updated with new information.
I'm looking for scrap metal places in HRM (or within driving distance/south shore, whatever). Do any of the fab shops around sell their cut-offs?
I'm looking to practice my MIG welding and would like to get cheap/free scraps to do so (no point in spending money on good steel to just mess it all up).
Also, very curious to hear the prices some folks are paying for some typical sizes of tubing, RHS, angle, etc.
Thanks
Tim

At work we use TG Industries for our welding/ fab. I think they are quite expensive, but they do good work.
